Gor Mahia tightened their grip on the FKF Premier League title race with a hard-earned 1–0 victory over Kakamega Homeboyz at Mumias Sports Complex, opening a commanding 9-point gap at the summit.
Fresh from their Mashemeji Derby triumph over AFC Leopards, K’Ogalo arrived with momentum and a clear objective to keep winning as the season edges toward its conclusion. What followed was a tense and tactical contest that required patience, discipline, and resilience.
There was early intrigue before kickoff, as both teams declined the traditional handshake, briefly delaying proceedings amid talk of superstition. Once underway, Gor Mahia showed their intent through a compact and structured setup orchestrated by head coach Charles Akonnor.
Akonnor made key adjustments to his side, deploying a 5-man defensive line with the return of Silvester Owino, while Lawrence Juma also slotted back into midfield after a lengthy layoff stepping in for suspended Jackson Dwang’. The system provided balance, allowing Gor Mahia to stay organized defensively while remaining capable of springing forward when opportunities arose.

The first half was closely contested, with Gor Mahia carving out the better openings. Musa Shariff and Patrick Esombe both came close to breaking the deadlock, while the hosts threatened mainly from set pieces that were well dealt with by goalkeeper Bryne Omondi.
After the restart, Gor Mahia looked to inject fresh energy. Ebenezer Assifuah was introduced in the 50th minute for Patrick Esombe, adding pace and width to the attack. Just past the hour mark, Akonnor made a double change, bringing on Ben Stanley and Kapen in place of Silvester Owino and Lawrence Juma as he sought to maintain intensity and control.
Despite the changes, clear chances remained limited, with Homeboyz holding their shape and attempting to test Gor Mahia from distance. Bryne Omondi, however, remained alert to ensure his side stayed level.
As the match edged toward a stalemate, Gor Mahia raised the tempo in the closing minutes. Their persistence paid off in the 89th minute when Assifuah swung in a dangerous cross into the box. Under pressure, defender Peter Thiong’o attempted to clear but instead diverted the ball into his own net, handing Gor Mahia a crucial breakthrough.
Moments later, Ebenezer Adukwaw was introduced for Musa Shariff as Gor Mahia looked to manage the closing stages. There was still late drama, as Enock Morrison was sent off deep into stoppage time, reducing the visitors to 10 men. Despite the setback, they held firm to see out the result.

The victory lifts Gor Mahia to 64 points, placing them firmly in control of the title race. With only 4 matches remaining, they are now within touching distance of reclaiming the league crown, needing just 2 wins and a draw to seal it, depending on how results elsewhere unfold.
Elsewhere, Bidco United and Kariobangi Sharks played out a goalless draw at Wanguru Stadium in a relegation battle match where defensive discipline outweighed attacking threat and both teams cautious not to slip up . The draw leaves both teams still stuck in relegation zone. With 1 club (Sofapaka) relegation already confirmed , it’s a wait to see which two other clubs joined them with only 4 matches left to play..
