Egypt kept their dream FIFA World Cup campaign alive after defeating Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout following a gripping 1-1 draw after extra time in their Round of 32 clash at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
The Pharaohs, who had already made history by registering their first-ever World Cup victory during the group stage, once again showed immense resilience and composure, prevailing from the spot to book a place in the Round of 16, where they will face defending champions Argentina.
Australia started brightly and nearly took the lead inside five minutes when Volpato’s powerful long-range strike brushed the top of the crossbar.
Despite the Socceroos’ early dominance, it was Egypt who struck first in the 13th minute. Ashour rose highest following a set-piece and a series of rebounds to head home and give the Pharaohs a surprise lead.

The goal changed the complexion of the match as Egypt grew in confidence while Australia continued to dominate possession without finding a breakthrough. The Socceroos repeatedly threatened from corners and free-kicks, but Egypt’s disciplined defending ensured they carried a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
Australia emerged with renewed purpose after the restart and almost immediately found another gear. Egypt came close to doubling their lead before the Socceroos finally found the equaliser in the 55th minute through captain Harry Souttar, who powered home a towering header from a well-worked set-piece.

The equaliser shifted momentum firmly in Australia’s favour. The Socceroos controlled possession for long spells and pinned Egypt deep inside their own half, forcing the African side to defend resolutely.
As the match entered its closing stages, Egypt gradually regained their composure and began creating opportunities of their own. Mohamed Salah became increasingly influential, helping the Pharaohs push forward in search of a late winner, but Australia’s defence held firm to send the contest into extra time.
The additional 30 minutes proved to be a battle of endurance rather than attacking brilliance. Fatigue affected both teams as clear-cut chances became scarce, with organised defending taking centre stage. Salah continued to threaten in the closing moments, but neither side could find the decisive breakthrough.
With the score still locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes, the match was decided by a penalty shootout.
Australia’s hopes suffered an immediate blow when Harry Souttar blasted the opening penalty over the crossbar. Mohamed Saber calmly converted Egypt’s first kick before Rabia restored the Pharaohs’ advantage after Australia’s second successful penalty.
The Socceroos converted their third attempt to remain in contention, but Salah responded with remarkable composure, delicately chipping his penalty into the net to keep Egypt in control of the shootout.
The decisive moment arrived in the fourth round when Australia struck the crossbar with another missed penalty. Egypt’s fourth taker held his nerve and buried the winning spot-kick, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Egyptian players and supporters as the Pharaohs secured a place in the Round of 16.

It was another memorable night for Hossam Hassan’s men, who continue to rewrite their World Cup history after ending their long wait for a first tournament victory earlier in the competition. Their reward is a blockbuster Round of 16 showdown against defending champions Argentina, who edged Cape Verde 3-2 after extra time in one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches.
