Late Daka Header Rescues Zambia as Chipolopolo Hold Mali in Dramatic Group A Opener

Zambia and Mali shared the points in a gripping 1–1 draw at the Casa Blanca Stadium as Group A action continued at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a result that leaves the group finely balanced after the opening round of matches.

Mali began the contest on the front foot, asserting control early and testing Zambia’s defensive resolve. Within the opening minutes, the Eagles created the first clear opportunity when Dorgeles Nene’s effort narrowly missed the target. Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza was quickly called into action and would go on to play a decisive role in the match.

As the half progressed, Zambia grew into the game, tightening their shape and competing more aggressively in midfield. The encounter became increasingly physical, with frequent fouls disrupting the flow as both sides sought dominance. The defining moment of the first half arrived just before the interval when VAR intervened to award Mali a penalty after a foul on Nene. However, Mwanza produced a superb save from the spot, denying Mali and ensuring the teams went into the break level.

The second half brought greater urgency. Mali eventually broke the deadlock in the 61st minute when Lassine Sinayoko capitalized on a corner kick, finding space in the box to head home and give the Eagles a deserved lead. The goal lifted Mali’s confidence as they pushed forward in search of a second, briefly taking control of the match.

Zambia were forced to respond. The 2012 champions made attacking changes and increased their tempo, pushing Mali deeper as the match entered its closing stages. Despite Mali creating chances to extend their advantage, Zambia remained within reach, pressing relentlessly and committing numbers forward.

That persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. In the 92nd minute, Patson Daka rose above the defense to meet a cross from Moses Banda, powering a header into the net to snatch a dramatic equalizer and spark celebrations among the Zambian supporters.

Moments later, with both teams preparing late substitutions, the referee brought the contest to an end. The draw reflected the balance of a match shaped by disciplined defending, key saves, and late drama.

The result leaves Morocco top of Group A with three points following their opening win over Comoros. Zambia and Mali sit joint second with one point each, while Comoros remain bottom of the group. With two rounds still to play, Group A is already shaping up to be tightly contested, with little margin for error for all four sides.
