Cleophas Malala Speaks Out from Police Custody After Arrest Amidst Controversy Over ‘Echoes of War’ Play

Former United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General Cleophas Malala is currently detained at Eldama Ravine Police Station following his arrest on Wednesday night. Speaking from his cell, Malala stated that the police have not informed him of the reasons for his detention and he is awaiting further action.

Malala’s arrest is linked to the ongoing controversy surrounding the play “Echoes of War” by Butere Girls High School. On Wednesday, police used tear gas to disperse journalists covering the play, and Malala was barred from accessing the students’ camp.

In August 2024, Malala was ousted as UDA Secretary General, with Hassan Omar appointed as his successor. Despite this, Malala has continued to assert his position within the party, leading to internal disputes and calls for his expulsion.

As of now, Malala remains in police custody, awaiting clarification on the charges against him.
