Serie A suspended Olivier Giroud for two games on Tuesday for hurling obscenities at referees at the end of AC Milan’s thrilling and contentious 2-2 draw at Lecce.
France striker Olivier Giroud was sent off in stoppage time at Stadio Via del Mare on Saturday after directing “abusive expressions” at referee Rosario Abisso following an earlier card for dissent.
Giroud, who has eight goals this season, was subsequently issued a straight red card and will now miss the following home games against Fiorentina and Frosinone after the international break.
Abisso was at the center of a debate when Lecce were denied a dramatic comeback from two goals down when Roberto Piccoli blasted home what appeared to be an amazing winner from distance shortly after Giroud’s dismissal.
The hit, however, was called back because Piccoli stood on Malick Thiaw’s foot before collecting the ball.
That decision infuriated the previously jubilant fans, as well as club president Saverio Sticchi Damiani and Lecce’s players and training staff.
Saverio Sticchi Damiani has been suspended until December 4 for “intimidatory behavior toward match officials” and threatening them in the locker room after the game.
He then hinted at a plot when he accused Abisso and the VAR officials of “splitting hairs” in order to rule out the goal.
Stefano Trinchera, the club’s sporting director, was also suspended for three matches and fined 10,000 euros ($10,900) for identical offenses compounded by “blasphemy,” while CEO Sandro Mencucci was suspended until November 27.
However, being rescued from loss had little effect for Milan, who dropped eight points behind league leaders and local rivals Inter Milan.
