Gor Mahia begin their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign tonight with a mouthwatering Group A clash against Rwandan champions APR FC at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, with kick-off set for 8:00 p.m. EAT.

The fixture brings together two of East Africa’s most decorated clubs and reigning league champions in what is expected to be one of the standout matches of the tournament. Also in Group A are Ugandan champions Vipers SC and Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine, making every result vital with only the three group winners and the best second-placed side advancing to the semi-finals.

Tonight’s encounter also gives Gor Mahia a chance to improve their record against APR, who have enjoyed the better of previous meetings between the two clubs. The Rwandan side has won three of their five competitive encounters, while K’Ogalo have one victory and one draw to their name. However, Gor Mahia will take confidence from their memorable CAF Champions League triumph over APR in 2020, when they eliminated the Rwandan giants with victory in Nairobi (First leg 2-1 loss in Kigali before overturning the scoreline with a 3-1 victory in Nairobi).

For Gor Mahia, the Kagame Cup is about much more than regional silverware. The tournament serves as a key pre-season competition for clubs preparing for the CAF Champions League giving coaches an ideal opportunity to assess their squads before the new domestic and continental campaigns.

New head coach Charles Akonnor will use the tournament to evaluate a revamped Gor Mahia side assembled during the transfer window. The club has strengthened its attack with the arrival of 18-goal striker Paul Okoth from Ulinzi Stars, while midfield duo Enock Machaka and Lesley Otieno have joined from Nairobi United after impressive performances in the CAF Confederation Cup. Machaka also arrives as Nairobi United’s Most Valuable Player for the 2025/26 season.

The squad has also been reinforced by experienced goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi, Kenyan international defender Daniel Sakari and versatile winger Davis Odhiambo Kaleo, providing Akonnor with greater depth across the pitch.

There is more positive news with dependable striker Felix Oluoch returning to the travelling squad after recovering from injury. Although the opener against APR has come too soon for him to feature, the forward is expected to play a part later in the tournament as he continues rebuilding his match fitness.

Despite having only two weeks to prepare with the squad, Akonnor is satisfied with the progress his players have made.

“We are believing in our preparation. The boys have done very good work, a lot of work. They’ve put up a good show, good attitude. So far it’s been good. We are very, very happy with how we’ve seen them train from Nairobi to here,” he said.

The Ghanaian tactician admitted his team is still building rhythm but believes they have learned valuable lessons from the recent friendly against Rayon Sports.

“We know where we lack. In our last match, we’ve also seen the opponent tomorrow, we’ve seen how they play, and so it gives us a fair idea of how they operate. We will try and function very well in certain areas of the game, and I believe that once we do that, there will be a lot of chances for us,” he added.

Akonnor insists the competition will allow every player an opportunity to impress as he shapes a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts this season.

Leading Gor Mahia for the first time in a competitive match is newly appointed captain Sylvester Owino, who acknowledged the responsibility of succeeding the retired Philemon Otieno.

“It’s a huge responsibility because the previous captain achieved so much with the club. I’m still young, but I’m eager to lead. We begin that journey with this tournament, and we’re looking forward to winning the trophy,” said Owino.

The defender also urged Gor Mahia supporters and Kenyan football fans in Rwanda to turn out in large numbers and rally behind the team.

Besides regional bragging rights, clubs are also competing for attractive prize money. The winners will pocket approximately Ksh 3.87 million (US$30,000), runners-up will earn Ksh 2.58 million (US$20,000), while the third-placed team will receive Ksh 1.29 million (US$10,000).

A positive result against APR would not only strengthen Gor Mahia’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals but also provide an encouraging start for Akonnor as he begins building a team capable of challenging for honours both in Kenya and on the continental stage.
