Gor Mahia sent an early warning to their regional rivals with a stunning 5-0 demolition of Rwandan champions APR FC in their opening match of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup at Amahoro Stadium on Friday night.

The emphatic victory propelled K’Ogalo to the top of Group A on goal difference after Uganda’s Vipers SC defeated Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine 3-0 in the other group fixture. More importantly, it underlined the rapid progress being made under head coach Charles Akonnor, whose rebuilt squad produced a disciplined and ruthless display despite being only in the second week of pre-season.

Having entered the tournament looking to overturn an inferior head-to-head record against APR, Gor Mahia delivered one of their most commanding performances against the Rwandan giants, dominating both ends of the pitch and leaving the home supporters stunned.

With newly appointment captain Sylvester Owino unavailable through injury, Mike Kibwage wore the armband and inspired from the front. The experienced defender opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, giving Gor Mahia the breakthrough after a balanced opening half.

APR barely had time to recover before Cameroonian striker Patrick Essombe doubled the visitors’ advantage two minutes later with a composed low finish from the edge of the penalty area, handing K’Ogalo a deserved 2-0 lead at the interval.

The Rwandan champions attempted to mount a response after the break, but Gor Mahia remained compact defensively. Kibwage and Frank Odhiambo marshalled the backline with authority, while the midfield trio of Alpha Onyango, Jackson Dwang and debutant Enock Machaka dictated the tempo and denied APR space to build attacks.

Akonnor’s changes in the second half further highlighted the quality within his new-look squad.

New signing Paul Okoth announced himself in Gor Mahia colours by scoring on his competitive debut in the 73rd minute, calmly finishing from close range after a low cross from the left.

Six minutes later, another debutant, Lesley Otieno, capped an impressive first appearance by adding the fourth goal before Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah-Inkoom came off the bench to complete the rout with a well-taken finish in the 85th minute.

Several of Gor Mahia’s new recruits, including Paul Okoth, David Okoth and Enock Machaka, made competitive debuts and seamlessly slotted into Akonnor’s system, offering further encouragement ahead of the upcoming FKF Premier League and CAF Champions League campaigns.

Akonnor credited the victory to his side’s defensive discipline and tactical execution.

“We realized we had shown some defensive weaknesses in our previous match, so it was important to stay organized at the back before going forward. We studied APR, understood where we could hurt them, and the players executed the plan very well,” said the Ghanaian coach.

He was particularly pleased with the performance considering the limited time he has had with the squad.

“We are only in our second week of training, so performing like this is very satisfying. We stayed compact, allowed them to come onto us and attacked quickly whenever we won the ball. The players carried out the plan brilliantly,” he added.

Akonnor also praised the club’s recruitment, saying the additions were necessary to ensure Gor Mahia remain competitive across all competitions.

“We’re preparing for the CAF Champions League alongside the league season, so we needed a strong squad with enough depth. That’s why we brought in the new players, and they showed their quality.”

Winger Shariff Musa, whose dazzling run and assist set up Lesley Otieno’s goal, attributed the dominant display to the growing understanding within the squad.

“The chemistry among the players is improving every day. We understand each other’s movements, so when you receive the ball, you already know where your teammate will be. Everyone is focused on doing their job for the team,” Musa said.

The convincing victory not only gives Gor Mahia an ideal start to their Kagame Cup campaign but also sends a strong message to the rest of the competition that K’Ogalo are genuine contenders for the regional crown and eager to end 41 year regional title drought, a title they last won in 1985.

Attention now shifts to Monday’s crucial Group A showdown against Vipers SC, where another victory would leave the KPL record holders on the brink of securing a place in the semi-finals.
