Kenya’s Junior Starlets are heading back to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after coming from behind to defeat South Africa 3-1 at Nyayo National Stadium and complete a commanding 5-1 aggregate victory in the final qualification round.
The result seals back-to-back FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifications for the Junior Starlets, who made history in 2024 by becoming the first Kenyan football team, male or female, to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. They went on to represent Africa at the tournament in the Dominican Republic before bowing out at the group stage. With qualification now secured for Morocco 2026, the Junior Starlets will be aiming to build on that experience and reach the knockout rounds for the first time.
Holding a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Pretoria, where goals from Faith Boke and Brenda Achieng had put Kenya firmly in control of the tie. Kenyan girls appeared to be in a strong position before South Africa made a dream start. Bantwana captain Katleho Malebana capitalised on a defensive mistake in the 6th minute to hand the visitors an early lead and briefly revive their hopes of a comeback.
South Africa controlled much of the opening half, forcing goalkeeper Michelle Okoyo into several important saves. Brenda Achieng came closest to equalising after rounding the goalkeeper, but her effort struck the post as Kenya went into the break trailing 1-0 while still leading on aggregate.
Cheche’s halftime adjustments transformed the match.
The Junior Starlets returned with greater intensity and attacking purpose, with Emily Adhiambo Mbuya providing fresh energy from the bench while Faith Boke and Brenda Achieng continued to trouble the South African defence.
Kenya’s persistence finally paid off when defender Gaudancia Malomba rose highest to head home from a long throw, restoring the hosts’ aggregate cushion and lifting the atmosphere inside Nyayo National Stadium.

The momentum had completely shifted. Substitute Elizabeth Opiyo made an immediate impact by winning a penalty moments after coming on, and captain Beverline Awuor Atieno calmly converted from the spot to put Kenya ahead on the night.
Elizabeth Alizeba added the third goal to wrap up a deserved victory and complete an emphatic 5-1 aggregate triumph over one of Africa’s established youth football nations.

The victory also confirmed Kenya’s place in Group C at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup to be held from October 17th to November 7th, where the Junior Starlets will face Canada, Brazil and Norway. It promises to be a stern challenge, but one that presents another opportunity for the young Kenyans to showcase their progress against some of the world’s strongest football nations.
Speaking after the match, head coach Mildred Cheche praised her players for overcoming a difficult first half and responding positively after the break.
“It’s been a good journey. We thank God for the victory. In the first half the girls were overwhelmed because they hadn’t played in front of such a big crowd, but at halftime I reminded them they were at home. Even if they hadn’t experienced such an atmosphere before, they had to step up and turn it around,” she said.
Cheche said the team’s focus now shifts to Morocco, where the Junior Starlets hope to improve on their debut World Cup campaign.
