The 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship enters another decisive day in Nairobi, with the group-stage race beginning to take shape after a series of commanding performances and thrilling contests on Day Two.

Hosts and defending champions Kenya headline the Day Three programme when the Malkia Strikers face Mali at 7pm at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, knowing victory will officially secure top spot in Pool A.

Kenya opened their title defence with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Zambia, winning 25-14, 25-9 and 25-11. Zambia subsequently bounced back by defeating Mali 3-1, leaving Kenya and Zambia level on three points, with Mali yet to register a win.

With only three teams competing in Pool A following Morocco’s absence from the championship, Kenya have already secured a place in the quarter-finals. A win over Mali would, however, guarantee the defending champions first position in the group and the advantage of prime seeding heading into the knockout stage.

The Malkia Strikers will be looking to carry the momentum from their opening performance into the encounter as they continue their pursuit of a second successive continental title.

Elsewhere, Pool B has developed into a two-team battle between Egypt and Uganda, with both sides maintaining perfect records after two matches.

Egypt continued their impressive campaign by sweeping Senegal 3-0 on Tuesday, winning 25-12, 25-10 and 25-8. The result moved the Egyptians to six points and six sets won from two matches.

Uganda matched Egypt’s record with another clean sweep, defeating Burkina Faso 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-18). The Lady Volleyball Cranes also have six points and have yet to drop a set.

The two unbeaten sides will meet at 10am today at Kasarani Arena in what promises to be one of the day’s biggest clashes. The winner will take a major step towards finishing top of Pool B.

Burkina Faso and Senegal, meanwhile, will meet at 1pm at Kasarani as they search for their first points of the competition.

Pool C is equally intriguing, with Cameroon sitting at the summit after making a perfect start. The reigning continental contenders defeated Ghana in their opening match before sweeping Tunisia 3-0 on Day Two, winning 25-18, 25-17 and 25-23.

Cameroon have six points from two matches and have not lost a set.

Tunisia sit second with three points, while Nigeria have two points after their dramatic five-set victory over Ghana. Nigeria edged Ghana 18-16 in the deciding set after the two sides had traded sets in an extraordinary contest.

Nigeria will now face Cameroon at 4pm at Kasarani Arena, while Ghana take on Tunisia at 5pm at Ulinzi Complex.

Pool D has also produced a strong early showing from Rwanda. The Rwandan Queens followed their opening 3-0 victory over Algeria with another straight-sets win against Democratic Republic of Congo, taking the match 25-17, 25-15 and 25-16.

Rwanda therefore lead the pool with six points and a perfect set record.

Algeria and DR Congo have three points each, while Burundi are yet to pick up a point after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Algeria on Day Two.

The Day Three action in Pool D begins at 11am at Ulinzi Complex when Burundi face Rwanda, while Algeria meet DR Congo at 2pm in a potentially important battle for the second quarter-final position.

The championship has already delivered a mixture of dominant displays and dramatic encounters, with 16 nations competing for continental honours in Nairobi.

Beyond the African crown, the tournament carries major international significance. The eventual champions will earn Africa’s qualification place in women’s volleyball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, while the three highest-placed eligible teams will qualify for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Championship.
