GOR MAHIA SUFFER STUNNING 4–1 DEFEAT AS APS BOMET PRODUCE THE BIGGEST SHOCK OF THE SEASON

Gor Mahia walked into Tuesday’s rescheduled clash against APS Bomet expecting a routine evening at Nyayo Stadium, an opportunity to stretch their lead at the summit against a struggling debutant still finding its feet in the top flight. On paper, it looked straightforward: APS Bomet arrived bottom of the SportPesa League table with only one win from eight matches, drawing one and losing six. But football remains a ruthless teacher, and what unfolded left pundits, purists, and supporters completely stunned.

Charles Akonnor rang in the changes, rotating heavily and resting 9 starters from the side that battled past Tusker FC over the weekend. The idea was simple — preserve legs ahead of the coming Mashemeji Derby , but the gamble backfired brutally.

Gor Mahia started brightly and drew first blood in the 5th minute. Lawrence Juma delivered a precise corner that met the boot of Ghanaian defender George Amonno, who volleyed home his first goal for the club. It felt like the early opener would settle K’Ogalo into rhythm, but instead it sparked the opposite.

APS Bomet fought their way back, and in the 38th minute the match turned. A Rodgers Kipkemoi cross struck Michael Kibwage’s arm inside the box, and the referee wasted no time pointing to the spot. Hansel Ochieng stepped up with confidence, sending Bryne Omondi the wrong way for his third goal of the season. Four minutes later Hansel struck again, receiving a slide pass and finishing calmly at the far post to flip the match on its head in the 42nd minute.

Against all odds, APS Bomet , a team fresh from Kericho and anchored to the bottom of the table , walked into halftime leading in Nairobi. The usually vibrant K’Ogalo faithful were silenced, some booing as the players left the pitch. The shock was real.

Akonnor reacted immediately at the break, withdrawing Kapen and Chris Ochieng for Shariff Musa and Ochuoga in search of stability. But even with further changes in the 57th minute ;Stanley and Levin giving way for Austin and Morison – GOR Mahia never settled. APS Bomet sensed vulnerability and managed the moments smartly, including slowing the tempo, which earned their goalkeeper a yellow card for time-wasting.

Akonnor exhausted his bench with a fifth substitution, bringing on Joshua Onyango for Sylvester Owino, but by then the cracks were widening.

The nightmare deepened when Kipkemoi’s strike was parried into the path of Lawrence Kibet, who squared it for the unstoppable Hansel Ochieng to bury his hat-trick and put APS Bomet 3–1 ahead. That goal sent shockwaves through Nyayo. Fans walked out. Drums fell silent. The disbelief was painful and widespread.

Hat-trick Hero Hansel Ochieng

The humiliation was sealed moments later when Hansel turned provider, setting up Kipkemoi to make it 4–1 — the heaviest league defeat Gor Mahia has suffered in almost two decades. APS Bomet, a club written off by many, had just delivered the upset of the season.

The victory lifted APS Bomet off the foot of the table, while for Gor Mahia, the defeat blew the title race wide open. Defending champions Kenya Police FC now have a clear path to reclaim top spot if they win their next two matches.

APS Bomet interim coach Benedict Wanjala could not hide his pride afterward:

“We have been looking for a win for long. There has been something we’ve been building. Most of my players have never played against Gor Mahia , that alone was motivation. I told them to go prove themselves. This win builds confidence. Our away form has been good; we had four points from two away matches, and today’s win gives us seven from a possible nine. We thank God.”

For Akonnor, it was a night of responsibility and reflection.

“Everything today didn’t go the way we planned, and I take full responsibility. We weren’t fresh and that’s why we rotated, but it didn’t work. We struggled to keep the ball, struggled to play with quality, and we paid the price. We changed to a back three to push more pressure, but again, execution failed. It’s a wake-up call.”
