Humiliation at Home: Uganda Cranes Torn Apart by Ruthless Algeria in CHAN Opener

What was meant to be a proud moment under the lights of Nelson Mandela Stadium turned into a nightmare for CHAN co-hosts Uganda Cranes, as they suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of a ruthless Algerian side.

Algeria took control of the match early and never let go, dominating from start to finish. The visitors struck first in the 35th minute when Ghezala headed home after Meziane’s flick from a corner. It was a deserved lead after sustained pressure that exposed Uganda’s shaky defending.

Despite a brief spell of possession and some half chances, the Cranes failed to trouble Algeria’s goalkeeper. Uganda’s attempts through Ssemugabi, Ssebagala, and Kakande were either blocked or misfired, and the hosts lacked the sharpness needed to break through.

The second half brought little improvement for Uganda. Algeria remained calm and in control, managing the pace of the game and waiting for the right moments to strike again. In the 76th minute, Meziane added a second after pouncing on a loose ball in the box, and three minutes later, Bayazid completed the rout. He rounded the keeper following a slick counterattack to score Algeria’s third goal, sealing a dominant performance.

Uganda’s multiple substitutions, including the introductions of Watambala, Sentamu, Mpande, Usama, and Kwikiriza, failed to change the momentum. The home side picked up several yellow cards and showed signs of frustration as the game slipped further away.

As the final whistle sounded at the fully packed Namboole, Uganda Cranes were left to reflect on a sobering defeat in front of their own fans. Algeria, in contrast, walked away with three well-earned points and a statement victory to open their CHAN 2024 campaign.

The Desert Foxes

The victory propelled the Desert Foxes to the top of Group C on goal difference, ahead of Guinea who beat Niger 1-0 earlier. Algeria will face South Africa next, while Uganda Cranes must regroup quickly ahead of their second match against Guinea . Both matches on 8th August at Nelson Mandela stadium Namboole.
