West Pokot Leaders Demand Immediate Action to End Illegal Gold Mining Amid Fatal Collapses

Political leaders in West Pokot County are urging the government to swiftly halt unlicensed gold mining activities following a series of fatal accidents. On saturday, a gold mine collapsed in Kambi Karaya village, Sigor, resulting in the deaths of two women and injuries to four others. The victims were identified as Cheporenger Lolinganyang, 30, and Cheposera Angoriamot, 40. The injured miners were rescued by fellow miners and villagers before being taken to a nearby health facility for treatment.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of mining-related tragedies in the region. In December 2024, four individuals were killed in a similar collapse at Lami Nyeusi, and another woman died in a separate incident in Korosion village along the River Turkwel.

Leaders, including former West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo, Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong, and Woman Representative Rael Kasiwai, have criticized the county government’s failure to regulate illegal mining operations. They accuse certain individuals of colluding with government officials to facilitate these activities. County Commissioner Khalif Abdullahi has stated that investigations are underway to determine the causes of the recent collapses and has urged miners and mine owners to prioritize safety.

Residents are calling for immediate government intervention to enforce mining regulations and prevent further loss of life. Artisanal mining remains a significant livelihood for many, but the lack of proper oversight has led to numerous fatalities.
