On Tuesday, the Teachers’ Employer stated that it has removed the Education degree requirement for its representation at the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.
In an updated public notice published in Mygov, a state newspaper collection for government employment and tenders, the Teachers Service Commission included a general degree as a requirement.
Kenyans with any university diploma can now apply for the position, rather than just those with a bachelor’s degree in education.
TSC’s advertising in the same issue on February 27 only accepted submissions from graduate teachers, excluding hundreds of other degree holders.
The most recent amendment, published in the March 5 edition, demonstrates that one does not need to be a graduate teacher to represent TSC at the SRC table.
“Pursuant to the provisions of Article 230 (2) (b) (iv) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and Section 5(2) of the Salaries and RemunerationCommission Act (2011), the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) invites applications from suitably qualified persons to be nominated to represent T.S.C. in the Salaries and Remuneration Commission,” the notice reads in part.
Following the re-advertisement, TSC announced that the application window would be extended from March 7 to March 25, 2024.
Other criteria for the TSC representation at the SRC remain unchanged, including a decade of expertise in finance and administration, public management, and economics.
Other criteria include ten years of expertise in human resource management and understanding of labor legislation.
According to the TSC, a person cannot be nominated if they are a state officer, including MPs and MCAs, or if they serve on a political party’s governing council.
To be eligible for the office, one must also satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution, which includes having a noteworthy career in their profession.
The potential candidate must not have been removed from office for violating any constitutional or statutory prohibitions.
Candidates must include academic qualifications and testimonials, as well as a two-page curriculum vitae.
“Applications should include academic and professional certificates, testimonials, a curriculum vitae limited to two pages, and contact details such as address, telephone number, and email address,” the notice reads.
Article 230(4) of the Constitution states that the SRC’s duties and authority include determining and periodically assessing the compensation and benefits received by all State offices.
The Commission also provides guidance to the federal and local governments regarding the pay and benefits of all other public servants.
