IEBC Resumes Voter Verification Portal Following Days-long Outage

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has restored its voter verification portal, following public outrage over an unexplained outage that prevented millions of Kenyans from accessing their voter registration information.

The commission said on Sunday that the portal is now operational again, following a period of system maintenance aimed at moving its infrastructure to improve performance and security.

The announcement comes after days of uncertainty in which Kenyans were unable to validate their registration data through the IEBC web page or the SMS platform, which asks voters to text their ID or passport number and year of birth to 70000.

Both verification channels were inaccessible during the maintenance time, causing increasing concern, especially as political momentum develops near the 2027 General Election.

In a statement released on Sunday, the electoral commission sought to reassure voters, saying, “We wish to assure all Kenyans that the registration details of the 22,120,458 registered voters as recorded during the 2022 General Election remain intact and secure.”

” The IEBC added that the system upgrade was necessary to bolster service delivery through improved system performance and data security.

However, the lack of clarity and communication during the downtime triggered public concern and scrutiny. The commission failed to disclose when the maintenance began, how long it would last, or the specific nature of the system upgrades.

Its initial statement merely noted, “We will promptly communicate once the system is fully operational and ready for verification of voter details,” without providing a concrete timeline.

The sudden unavailability of verification tools, particularly in a country with a history of contentious elections and concerns about electoral integrity, spurred new debate about the commission’s preparedness and transparency in the run-up to 2027.

The IEBC’s subsequent confirmation that the portal had been restored was reassuring, but concerns remain about the commission’s communication processes and ability to proactively manage important public infrastructure.

While the voter verification tool is already operational, observers and civil society groups urge the IEBC to be more transparent when managing sensitive digital infrastructure. As the electoral calendar approaches, the commission is under increasing pressure to demonstrate institutional reliability and restore public trust in its handling of electoral procedures.

The voter verification tool is critical in maintaining accurate election rolls and empowering voters to engage in the political process.

With over 22 million registered voters and escalating political stakes, the IEBC’s operational efficiency and communication methods are likely to continue under scrutiny in the run-up to 2027.
