Skype Officially Shuts Down After 22 Years

Microsoft has officially shut down Skype, ending its 22-year run as one of the most influential voice and video communication platforms. Launched in 2003 and acquired by Microsoft in 2011, Skype played a key role in shaping online communication.

The decision comes as Microsoft shifts its focus to Teams, which now serves as the company’s primary communication platform. Existing Skype users can migrate to Teams using their current credentials, though some legacy features will not carry over.

Users have until January 2026 to export their data.
