Rayon Upset Holders as Kampala Queens Hit Top Gear in CAF Women’s CECAFA Qualifiers

The 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League CECAFA qualifiers began on Thursday 4 September and have already delivered a mix of shocks, dominant wins and individual brilliance as champions from across the region continue their battle for the single continental slot. Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium hosted the opening matches, with every team aware that one slip could be fatal in a tournament where only the group winners advance to the final tournament in November.

The competition kicked off with a major upset as Rwanda’s Rayon Sports edged defending champions Commercial Bank of Ethiopia by 2-1 in a gripping Group B contest. CBE, looking to retain the title and return to the continental stage, were undone by Rayon’s sharp execution and relentless energy. It was a result that immediately sent a message to the rest of the field. No one is untouchable this year.

Later on the same day, Kenya Police Bullets began their campaign in front of home supporters with a narrow 1-0 over Uganda’s Kampala Queens. The Ugandan side saw more of the ball and created chances but couldn’t convert, while the Bullets capitalised on a decisive moment to grab all three points and put themselves in early control of Group A.

On Friday 5 September, Tanzania’s JKT Queens took to the field and swept past Zanzibar’s JKU Princess with a commanding 5-0 victory. JKT looked dangerous every time they pushed forward, using pace and width to devastating effect. The result put them in firm control of Group C with a strong goal difference and early confidence.

Sunday saw Kampala Queens return to action and they responded in spectacular fashion, demolishing Eritrea’s DenDen Women by 7-0. Three players ; Kamiyati Naigaga, Lema Turist Tone and Peace Muduwa , each scored twice in a dominant attacking display that reignited their campaign and elevated them to the top of the scoring charts. The result not only restored belief but also boosted their position in Group A heading into the crucial middle round of fixtures.
