KDF-Led Renovation to Transform Afraha Stadium into 20,000-Seater Sports Hub

Afraha Stadium in Nakuru is undergoing an ambitious modernization program aimed at transforming the facility into a 20,000-seater sports hub. The multi-phase project, spearheaded by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), forms part of the government’s broader effort to upgrade sports infrastructure across the country and elevate key venues to international standards.

According to Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, the renovations are structured to progressively expand the stadium’s seating capacity, with intermediate phases targeting 13,000 to 15,000 seats while the long-term goal is a full 20,000 capacity.

Afraha Stadium has a rich history, having hosted prominent league matches and regional tournaments. Notably, the venue welcomed Tanzanian giants Simba SC and Young Africans SC (Yanga) during the 2018 SportPesa tournament. It also served as the home ground for KPL side Ulinzi Stars, before the club relocated to the Ulinzi Complex in Lang’ata, Nairobi. Nakuru-based clubs such as Nakuru All Stars also previously played here, though they last participated in Kenya’s top-flight league in 2015 before relegation.

The stadium was first closed for renovations in 2021, leaving the venue inactive for four years. It reopened briefly on May 20th, 2025, hosting a Division 1 football clash. However, the return of Kenya Premier League matches has been on hold for over five years, leaving fans and the local football community eagerly awaiting the stadium’s revival as a top-tier venue.

The ongoing works focus on strengthening the stadium’s core structure. Engineers are installing reinforced concrete pillars, casting columns, setting up beams, and conducting terracing works to support the expanded seating areas and improve spectator circulation.

Beyond structural improvements, the project includes a range of modern facilities. An all-weather Tartan running track will allow year-round athletics events, while the football pitch is being upgraded to meet competitive standards suitable for both domestic and regional matches. New high-mast floodlights will facilitate evening fixtures, and VIP pavilions are being constructed to enhance comfort, visibility, and the stadium’s ability to host high-profile events.

Throughout the renovation, the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration plays a crucial coordinating role. The department ensures site security, facilitates smooth inter-agency collaboration, and maintains an enabling environment for the works to progress safely and efficiently.

Once complete, the upgraded Afraha Stadium is expected to reinforce Nakuru’s position as a regional sporting hub, provide more opportunities for talent development, and support the growth of sports tourism and local economic activity. The project underscores the government’s commitment to creating world-class sports facilities that can nurture athletes and host significant sporting events.
