A postmortem examination on six victims of the helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County, has established that they succumbed to multiple traumatic injuries to the head, chest, and spine.
The autopsies were conducted at Lee Funeral Home under the supervision of Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor. Findings revealed that the victims sustained extensive internal injuries during the impact and suffered significant burns after the aircraft caught fire upon crashing.
Among those who lost their lives were Emurua Dikir MP Johana Ng’eno, Robert Kipkoech Keter, Amos Kimwetich Rotich, Nicholas Kosgei, Wycliffe Kiprotich Rono, and the pilot, retired Colonel George Were.
Crash Details
According to witnesses and local officials, the helicopter went down at approximately 4:45pm on Saturday near the edge of Chepkieb Forest in Mosop, shortly after attempting to lift off from a temporary landing site close to the forested area.
Some eyewitnesses suggested that poor visibility due to ongoing rainfall may have played a role in the accident. However, authorities have stated that investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Burial Plans Underway
The completion of the postmortems has cleared the way for funeral arrangements, with families present during the exercise.
A memorial service for Ng’eno is scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, at Nairobi Baptist Church, where friends, colleagues, and constituents are expected to gather in his honour. A traditional night vigil will be held on Thursday, March 5, in accordance with Kipsigis customs, ahead of his burial on Friday at his Narok residence. Funeral plans for the other victims are still being finalised.
Leaders Pay Tribute
Political leaders from across the divide have mourned the deceased, describing them as committed and selfless public servants.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula termed Ng’eno an exemplary legislator whose dedication to public service and parliamentary leadership set a high benchmark.
Speaking to the press on March 3, 2026, Wetang’ula described the passing of the three-term MP as a significant loss to Parliament and the country. He lauded Ng’eno’s tenure as chair of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning, and Public Works, noting that the committee was instrumental in shaping the Affordable Housing Act, 2024, aimed at increasing access to decent and affordable homes.
The Speaker has since formed an ad hoc committee to coordinate with the late MP’s family on funeral preparations and urged Kenyans to remember him for his integrity, dedication, and lasting contribution to national development.
