Police in Nairobi are on the scene following the fatal shooting of a protestor on Thursday evening as part of the ongoing Gen Z-led demonstrations against the proposed Finance Bill 2024.
The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Rex Kanyike. He is currently laying at the City Mortuary Morgue.
According to Austin Arnold, a lawyer familiar with the case, Kanyike was on his way home with a buddy around 7 p.m. when he was shot in the knee outside the Hilton Hotel on Moi Avenue by a rogue cop using live ammunition.
The gunshot remained trapped in his body until he died from heavy bleeding.
According to reports, he tried to seek medical attention for more than 20 minutes before being brought to Bliss Medical Centre on Moi Avenue, where he was pronounced dead.
“I have spent the night with the family of Rex and we have delivered the body to City Mortuary for Post-Mortem in the morning. It is a shattered family. They are clinging to hope, because that’s all they can do,” Arnold said.
Activist Boniface Mwangi also corroborated the occurrence in an X statement, noting that he saw the deceased’s parents after the tragedy.
“I’m sharing pictures of 24-year-old Rex Kanyike lying the in morgue with consent from his parents, Chrispin Odawa and Gillian Munyao whp are standing over his body at the City Mortuary,” said Mwangi.
“He was killed by the police this evening. They’re shocked and numb from the loss of their son.”
