The opening rounds of the 2026 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association National Term One Games delivered an action-packed start in Kisumu, with teams across basketball, hockey, rugby, and handball stepping onto the national stage in a series of tightly contested fixtures.
Matches being played across key venues within the city, with rugby 15s taking place at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium and Kisumu Polytechnic, basketball and handball fixtures hosted at Kisumu Polytechnic ,hockey matches played at Kisumu Day High School and Athletics and cross county at Kisumu boys High School. The opening day fixtures offered early insights into the teams to watch as the championships gather momentum.
In boys’ basketball, Lukenya Academy made a strong statement with a 62–42 win over Dr. Aggrey, while Dagoretti High followed with a convincing 78–65 victory against Laiser Hill. Friends School Kamusinga also began on a winning note, defeating Mang’u High 49–34, as St. Mary’s Yala dominated Sabunley High with a commanding 76–31 triumph.
Girls’ basketball action saw Barchando secure a 49–32 win over Loreto, while Kaya Tiwi overcame Ikutha Girls 65–45. Butere Girls edged Olympic 45–34 in a competitive encounter, and St. Brigid’s delivered the most emphatic result of the day, thrashing Takaba Girls 123–6.
On the hockey pitch, St. Anthony’s Boys Kitale edged Kisumu Day 1–0 in a narrow contest, while Alliance High School registered a solid 2–0 win over Mbooni. Friends School Kamusinga continued their fine form across disciplines with a 1–0 victory against Ringa Boys, as Hospital Hill and St. Charles Lwanga played out a goalless draw. In the girls’ matches, Ng’iya Girls claimed a 1–0 win over Mwiki, while Nyamira Girls and St. Joseph’s Girls Kitale settled for a 0–0 draw in a match that was later postponed.

Rugby 15s action at Mamboleo saw St. Mary’s Yala edge All Saints Embu 10–8 in a tightly fought clash, while Upper Hill cruised to a 16–0 win over Kwale High. Menengai High delivered one of the standout performances of the day with a dominant 46–5 victory against Mang’u High, as Kisii School narrowly beat Kakamega High 16–14 in one of the most competitive fixtures.
In the girls’ rugby 15s category, Paul Harris, Kinale Girls, Mwira Girls, and Mbagathi Girls all opened their campaigns with victories. Paul Harris defeated Sidindi 20–3, Kinale Girls beat St. Joseph’s Kitale 22–0, Mwira Girls overcame St. Theresa Embu 12–0, while Mbagathi Girls edged Sigoti Girls 17–10. Attention now shifts to the second round of fixtures, with key matchups lined up including Kinale Girls against Paul Harris and Mbagathi Girls facing St. Theresa Embu.

Handball fixtures also got underway with intense battles. In the boys’ category, St. Austin Matuu beat Highway 23–18, while Handege Boys defeated Sheikh Ali 47–30. Musingu High secured a 46–26 win over St. Mary’s Yala, and St. Joseph’s Boys overcame Kenyatta High 36–26. In the girls’ matches, Moi Girls Kamusinga beat Nyakach Girls 27–19, Kyeni Girls edged St. Claire Nembu 28–26, and St. Joseph’s Girls thrashed Mwatate 43–13, with the Karai versus North Eastern fixture still pending.
