Kenya Braces for Matildas Test as Coaches Call for Intensity Ahead of FIFA Series Final

Anticipation is building in Nairobi ahead of a thrilling FIFA Women’s Football Series final as the Kenya women’s national football team prepare to face the formidable Australia women’s national football team at Nyayo National Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Fresh from a commanding 5–0 victory over the Malawi women’s national football team, Australia arrive as favourites, but head coach Joe Montemurro has openly embraced the challenge awaiting his side in Nairobi. The Australian tactician has called on Kenyan fans to create a charged atmosphere, viewing it as a crucial part of his team’s growth.

He emphasized that facing a hostile and passionate crowd is exactly what the Matildas need, noting that such environments help simulate conditions they rarely encounter in Asia or at home. For Australia, this tournament is not just about results, but also about adapting to different football cultures and testing their resilience under pressure.

Saturday’s victory over Malawi was historic for the Matildas, marking their first ever match on African soil, and they now face a very different test against a Kenyan side buoyed by home support and growing confidence.

On the other side, Beldine Odemba has remained measured despite her team’s win over the India women’s national football team in the semi final. The Harambee Starlets coach acknowledged that while the performance was positive, there is still room for improvement, particularly in finishing and maintaining intensity throughout the match.

Odemba pointed out that her players showed moments of comfort after taking the lead, something she hopes to address ahead of the final. She also highlighted the importance of squad rotation and preparation, revealing that some players were rested with Wednesday’s clash in mind. Despite concerns over the injury to Ruth Ingosi, she expressed confidence in the depth of her squad, noting that every player in camp is ready to step up when called upon.

Beyond the technical build up, the Starlets have received a timely morale boost following their semi final victory. The team was awarded Ksh. 1 million by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya and Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, alongside an additional Ksh. 500,000 from the Football Kenya Federation(FKF) , a gesture aimed at motivating the squad ahead of the final showdown.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) have also moved to ensure a strong turnout, slashing ticket prices significantly. Regular tickets are now available at Ksh. 100, down from Ksh. 300, while VIP and VVIP access remain at Ksh.1,000 and Ksh.5,000 respectively, making the event more accessible to fans eager to witness the clash.
