KeNHA Launches Audit to Tackle Road Accidents on Major Highways

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has initiated a comprehensive safety audit of six major highways to identify accident blackspots and recommend measures to reduce road fatalities. The selected corridors for this audit are:

  • Gilgil-Nyahururu-Rumuruti-Maralal Highway (220 km)
  • Eldoret-Iten-Kabarnet-Marigat Road (133 km)
  • Muhoroni-Fort Tenan-Londiani Road (63 km)
  • Sori-Ndhiwa-Rangwe-Oyugis Road (79 km)
  • Kenol-Murang’a-Sagana-Kagio-Kianjiru Road (65 km)
  • Makutano-Machakos-Masii-Kyua-Syongila Road (109 km)

The audit will involve collecting and analyzing traffic crash data from the past five years to determine blackspots, frequency of crashes, injuries, and fatalities categorized by road user type. Based on this analysis, actionable safety recommendations will be provided to mitigate identified risks and improve overall road safety.

This initiative comes amid rising road accidents in Kenya. According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 4,748 people died in road accidents last year, an increase of 400 fatalities compared to 2023.

KeNHA’s audit aims to identify high-collision locations, assess contributory factors, and recommend mitigating measures, including possible road redesigns, to enhance road safety.

The findings from this audit are expected to guide infrastructure improvements and policy interventions aimed at enhancing road safety across the country.
