Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga has been unanimously elected as the chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy. This committee oversees matters related to fossil fuel exploration, development, production, maintenance, and regulation of energy in Kenya.
Senator Oginga’s appointment is seen as a strategic move following the recent political agreement between ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto. As part of this deal, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has been granted leadership of certain committees previously held by the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
In addition to Senator Oginga’s election, Wajir Senator Abass Mohamed and nominated Senator Catherine Mumma were unanimously elected as the chair and vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations, respectively.
These leadership changes are expected to influence the legislative direction of the Senate, particularly in energy and devolution matters.
