IEBC Seeks Ksh.61.7B for 2027 Polls Amid Growing Voter Base and Rising Costs

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has requested Ksh.61.7 billion for the 2027 general election. Deputy CEO Obadiah Keitany informed Parliament that the commission’s budget for boundary delimitation is Ksh.7 billion, pending a court advisory. Additionally, IEBC anticipates an increase of 5.7 million new voters, bringing the total to 28 million for the 2027 election.

The commission also noted that 14 by-elections are pending, projected to cost about Ksh.480 million. Furthermore, IEBC plans to replace 45,352 Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kits, with a total replacement cost of Ksh.7 billion, as the kits become obsolete after 10 years.

The commission has not registered new voters since 2022 due to budget constraints and the absence of commissioners, as the selection panel is in the process of recruiting new members. The 2022 general elections involved 22,120,258 voters and cost Ksh.44.6 billion
