Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sworn to defend former President Uhuru Kenyatta against any attacks on his legacy and personality.
Speaking to Mt Kenya vernacular radio and TV stations, Gachagua said it’s time the country stopped blaming Uhuru for everything that goes wrong.
“I will not let Uhuru Kenyatta’s name be dragged through the mud ever again because I am the one who will defend him now. We want Uhuru’s name to be respected because he did a lot of work in this country,’ he said.
Gachagua stated that Kenyans should allow the retired President and his family to enjoy their serenity.
He also emphasized the importance of ensuring that the former President receives the retirement benefits he is entitled to under the law.
“Let him be given his retirement benefits, his cars and his bodyguards,” he added.
Gachagua claimed Uhuru warned the region, but they did not listen, saying that he traveled to Kasarni at the handover, embarrassed.
“He went to Kasarani embarrassed and handed over the sword. Now it has been two years since then, why are we still blaming him for our problems like the economy? Let us leave him alone,” he said.
“Let him rest and for us, the problems we have as a government we should handle them ourselves.”
Gachagua sensationally claimed at a rally in Kiambu County in May 2024 that the Mt Kenya area had been duped into defaming their king.
He began attempting to reconcile with Uhuru and the region, promising that they would never again disrespect “the king of the Kikuyu community”.
“Let us teach our youth never again to be used by anyone to vilify our king. Let us love each other so that we get our rightful share of the Kenyan cake,” he said.
