Haaland Ends Ivory Coast’s Historic World Cup Dream

Ivory Coast’s remarkable journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end after a spirited 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 32, bringing the curtain down on the Elephants’ finest World Cup campaign.

The Elephants had already written history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time after bouncing back from their defeat to Germany with an impressive victory over Curaçao. Their reward was a meeting with a talented Norway side led by Erling Braut Haaland and captain Martin Ødegaard, and despite producing one of their finest performances of the tournament, the Elephants fell just short.

Emerse Faé’s men showed no signs of intimidation from the opening whistle in Dallas. While Norway enjoyed more possession in the early exchanges, it was the African champions who gradually took control through aggressive pressing and purposeful attacking football.

Nicolas Pépé was once again at the heart of Ivory Coast’s attack. The experienced winger consistently stretched the Norwegian defence, creating problems down the flanks alongside Yan Diomandé and Ghislain Konan.

The Elephants fashioned the better chances during the opening half. Pépé nearly broke the deadlock after Diomandé’s dangerous cross caused panic inside the Norwegian penalty area before Kristoffer Ajer cleared off the line. Konan then fired narrowly wide, while Emmanuel Agbadou forced goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland into an excellent save from long range.

Despite Ivory Coast’s dominance, Norway demonstrated the ruthless efficiency that often decides knockout football.

Six minutes before halftime, Martin Ødegaard threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Antonio Nusa, who produced a magnificent finish into the top corner to give the Europeans a 1-0 lead against the run of play.

It was a cruel blow for an Ivorian side that had looked the more adventurous and dangerous team throughout the opening period.

Ivory Coast resumed the second half with even greater intensity, pinning Norway deep inside their own half while searching relentlessly for an equaliser. Emerse Faé introduced Amad Diallo and Elye Wahi to inject fresh energy into the attack, and the substitutions immediately lifted the Elephants.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 74th minute. Nicolas Pépé combined brilliantly with substitute Amad Diallo, whose composed left-footed finish brought Ivory Coast level and reignited belief among the thousands of Ivorian supporters inside the stadium.

For several minutes, the momentum belonged entirely to the former African champions.

However, football’s biggest stars often decide the biggest matches. With just four minutes remaining, Patrick Berg launched a flowing Norwegian attack before delivering the decisive pass to Erling Haaland. The Manchester City striker made no mistake, calmly tapping home from close range to restore Norway’s lead and leave Ivory Coast chasing the game once again.

The Elephants threw everything forward in search of another equaliser. Deep into stoppage time, Ibrahim Sangaré won possession high up the pitch before Amad Diallo unleashed a fierce strike that forced Ørjan Nyland into a superb save, preserving Norway’s advantage.

Moments later, the final whistle confirmed Norway’s place in the Round of 16 and brought an end to Côte d’Ivoire’s historic World Cup adventure.

Although the result ended in heartbreak, the Elephants leave North America with their heads held high. They reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history and proved they could compete with one of Europe’s strongest sides, ultimately falling to moments of individual brilliance and clinical finishing.

Their elimination also represents another setback for African football. Tunisia became the continent’s first casualty after a disappointing group-stage campaign, before South Africa bowed out in the Round of 32 following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Canada. Côte d’Ivoire now become the third CAF representative to leave the tournament, but Africa’s hopes remain very much alive.

Morocco have already secured a place in the Round of 16, while Ghana, Egypt, Senegal, Algeria, DR Congo and Cape Verde are still preparing for their Round of 32 ties, hoping to keep the continent’s impressive 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign alive. With seven African nations still in contention before the knockout phase began, CAF continues to demonstrate its growing competitiveness on football’s biggest stage despite the early exits of Tunisia, South Africa and now Côte d’Ivoire.
