Gor Mahia will look to take a major step towards the semi-finals of the 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup when they face Uganda Premier League champions Vipers SC in a high-stakes Group A clash this afternoon at Pele Stadium in Kigali, with kick-off set for 4:00 p.m. EAT.

The two regional heavyweights meet after impressive opening victories, with the winner likely to secure a place in the last four of the tournament. Gor Mahia announced themselves as title contenders with a commanding 5-0 victory over hosts APR FC, while Vipers comfortably dispatched Djibouti’s Garde Républicaine 3-0.

The encounter brings together two clubs undergoing new eras under recently appointed coaches. Gor Mahia are under the guidance of Ghanaian tactician Charles Akonnor, while Vipers are being led by experienced French coach Denis Lavagne, who joined the Ugandan champions at the end of June on a two-year contract after replacing Belgian Ivan Jacky Minnaert.

K’Ogalo have received a significant boost ahead of the match with captain Sylvester Owino declared fit after recovering from the injury that ruled him out of the emphatic win over APR. The Harambee Stars defender is now available for selection, strengthening a defence that was outstanding in the opening fixture.

Despite the dominant victory over the Rwandan champions, Akonnor insists his players must remain grounded as they prepare for a completely different challenge.

“Against APR, we were very good because the players showed the right attitude and discipline. After the Rayon Sports match, we corrected several things, especially defensively, and the players responded very well. That performance has given us confidence going into this game,” said Akonnor.

The Ghanaian coach expects Vipers to offer a much sterner examination and warned against expecting another one-sided result.

“Winning 5-0 doesn’t mean it will happen again. Vipers have seen how we play, so it will be a difficult match. We have to approach it with the right mentality and hopefully come out with a positive result,” he added.

Akonnor also revealed that, with close to 30 players in Rwanda, the technical bench intends to give opportunities to almost every squad member during the group stage as the club continues preparations for the FKF Premier League and CAF Champions League campaigns.

That strategy could see more game time for Gor Mahia’s new signings, who made an immediate impact in the tournament opener. Paul Okoth marked his competitive debut with a goal, while Enock Machaka and Lesley Otieno impressed in midfield, with Otieno also finding the back of the net. Their performances highlighted the quality added during the transfer window and the depth now available to Akonnor.

Vipers have also arrived in Kigali with a refreshed squad after strengthening significantly ahead of the new season. Among their biggest additions is the return of Uganda Cranes star Farouk Miya, who rejoined the club after spending a decade in European football.

The 28-year-old attacking midfielder wasted little time reminding fans of his quality, scoring twice in Vipers’ opening 3-0 victory over Garde Républicaine. Miya previously helped Vipers win their first Uganda Premier League title before moving to Belgian side Standard Liège, with his European career taking him through Belgium, Azerbaijan, Croatia, Turkey, Ukraine and Greece.

The Ugandan champions have also bolstered their squad with the return of Congolese striker Yunus Sentamu Manzoki, alongside Joel Sserunjogi, Nicholas Mwere, Gabonese defender Loyce Mbaba and Congolese centre-back Jacques Mangoba.

Although pleased with his team’s winning start, Lavagne believes there is still room for improvement and has identified Gor Mahia as the toughest opponents in Group A.

“Our main target is preparing for the FUFA Super Cup, but we also want to win and reach the semi-finals. Gor Mahia were ruthless against APR and, for me, they are the strongest team in this group. We have to improve, but the players are motivated and ready for the challenge,” said the French coach.

He added that he expects a much better display from his side after feeling they fell below their standards despite beating Garde Républicaine.

With both clubs using the Kagame Cup as part of their preparations for domestic title defences and upcoming CAF Champions League assignments, today’s encounter promises to be one of the tournament’s defining Matches.

Both Gor Mahia and Vipers are also chasing regional bragging rights. The Venoms are seeking their first-ever CECAFA Kagame Cup title, while K’Ogalo are determined to end a 41-year wait for regional glory.
