Fuel Prices Hold Steady Amidst Global Cost Fluctuations

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced that fuel prices in Kenya will remain unchanged for the period of March 15 to April 14, 2025. In Nairobi, consumers will continue to pay Ksh176.58 per litre for Super Petrol, Ksh167.06 for Diesel, and Ksh151.39 for Kerosene.

This stability comes despite fluctuations in global oil prices. International benchmarks, such as Murban oil, decreased from USD 76.70 per barrel on February 26 to USD 70.45 per barrel on March 6. EPRA attributes the unchanged local prices to a subsidy mechanism designed to cushion consumers from global price volatility. citeturn0search7

EPRA’s Director-General, Daniel Kiptoo, emphasized that the current prices include a 16% Value Added Tax (VAT) in compliance with the Finance Act 2023 and the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024. The authority assures the public of its commitment to fair competition and the protection of both consumer and investor interests in the energy sector.

However, looking ahead, EPRA has indicated plans to revise the petroleum pricing formula, which could lead to price increases of up to Ksh7.80 per litre in the coming months. These adjustments aim to better reflect the current business environment and ensure the sustainability of the petroleum supply chain.
