Morocco continued Africa’s impressive start to Matchday Two of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Atlas Lions securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Scotland at Boston Stadium to boost their hopes of reaching the Round of 32.
The North Africans had entered the match full of confidence after earning a commendable 1-1 draw against Brazil in their opening Group C fixture. With qualification still wide open, Mohamed Ouahbi’s men knew that another positive result would place them firmly in control of their destiny ahead of their final group encounter against Haiti.

Morocco wasted little time stamping their authority on the contest. Just two minutes into the match, Ismael Saibari struck the fastest goal of the tournament so far. Brahim Díaz released a perfectly weighted pass down the right channel, allowing Saibari to burst behind the Scottish defence before firing a powerful right-footed finish beyond Angus Gunn to send the Moroccan supporters into celebration.
The early breakthrough set the tone for much of the first half. Morocco dominated possession, controlled the tempo and repeatedly threatened to extend their advantage. Scotland struggled to create clear opportunities as the Atlas Lions remained compact defensively while exploiting spaces in transition.By halftime, Morocco deservedly led 1-0, with Saibari’s early effort separating the two sides.

Scotland emerged with greater urgency after the break and almost benefited from a controversial penalty appeal, only for play to continue before Morocco launched a dangerous counterattack that struck the post. Bilal El Khannouss and Brahim Díaz both came close to doubling the lead, but the Scottish defence managed to keep the deficit at one goal.
As the match entered its closing stages, Steve Clarke introduced fresh attacking options in a bid to rescue a point. Scott McTominay saw an effort blocked while Lyndon Dykes headed wide as Scotland intensified the pressure.
However, Morocco’s defence stood firm. The Atlas Lions weathered the late storm and nearly added a second goal in stoppage time, with Chemsdine Talbi and Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab both going close on the counterattack.
After six minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a vital 1-0 victory for Morocco, handing the African representatives three precious points and strengthening their chances of progressing from Group C.
Having opened their campaign with a draw against Brazil and now defeating Scotland, the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists have collected four points from two matches and head into their final group game against Haiti with qualification firmly within reach.
