One of the most consistent participants in the African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosts Uganda return for their seventh appearance with renewed belief and the backing of a home crowd. Despite six previous attempts (2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022), the Cranes have never progressed beyond the group stage ,a statistic they are determined to erase in 2024.
This year’s tournament represents more than just a title chase for Uganda. As joint hosts of the upcoming AFCON alongside Kenya and Tanzania, the CHAN tournament serves as both a performance barometer and an opportunity to galvanize support and build momentum ahead of 2027.

Uganda took part in a CECAFA-organized Pre-CHAN Mini-Tournament held at Black Rhino Academy Stadium in Karatu, Tanzania. The Cranes suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to hosts Tanzania but quickly bounced back with a morale-boosting victory over Senegal. The team showed signs of tactical growth and attacking promise during the tournament, offering encouragement ahead of their home campaign.
Uganda will be led by the experienced coaching duo of Morley Byekwaso and Fred Muhumuza Byekwaso, a former national team midfielder, has carved out a reputation for developing young talent and shaping competitive squads. He famously led Uganda U20 to the AFCON final in 2021 and now steps onto the senior stage with growing pedigree. His assistant, Muhumuza, is a respected figure in local football, known for his methodical and analytical approach. Together, they form a well-balanced technical team aiming to deliver Uganda’s best-ever CHAN performance, though Cranes Head Coach Paul Put is involved in training.
