Following a boat capsize in River Migori in Matanda, Migori County, one person is allegedly missing.
Six people were using the boat to cross the river when the tragedy occurred, according to a statement released by the Kenya Red Cross on X. But just five had made it out alive.
“Early this morning, a boat capsized at the River Migori in Matanda. Thanks to the quick response and support from the community, five individuals were successfully rescued. Unfortunately, one person remains missing. The Kenya Red Cross and the County Government have mobilized additional divers for continued search and retrieval efforts,” read the statement.
The body stated that further efforts have been organized for the search and retrieval of the missing individual, and that rescue operations are still underway for them.
As of December 1, there have been 142 fatalities nationwide as a result of floods brought on by the country’s current El Nino rains.
The country’s rainy season is predicted to continue in the southern regions, with lessening amounts and coverage in the northern regions, according to a statement released by government spokesman Isaac Mwaura.
