Mathare United stunned KCB FC 1-0 on a rain-drenched Friday afternoon at Kasarani Annex, handing the Bankers their first defeat of the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League season thanks to a moment of brilliance from their captain, Elli Asieche.
The match began at a cautious tempo, with both teams feeling each other out in the early stages. By the 19th minute, there had been no attempts on goal, but the intensity was clear as the game swung end to end. Mathare winger Nyawir was a standout on the left flank, constantly troubling KCB’s defense with his movement and pace.

The first real opportunity of the match came in the 24th minute when Jack Okello pounced on a loose ball and struck from distance, but his effort couldn’t beat the Mathare keeper. December Kisakah looked lively for KCB, constantly trying his luck from range, but his attempts were off target.
Just when it looked like both sides would head into the break level, Elli Asieche stepped up in the 44th minute to deliver a moment of magic. From a tight angle near the byline, the Mathare captain whipped in a sensational free kick that curled past the KCB goalkeeper , a stunning goal that gave KCB a 1-0 lead just before halftime.
The second half began under heavy rain, but the downpour didn’t dampen the drama. In the 50th minute, Kevin Ouru produced a jaw-dropping one-handed save to deny KCB a quick equalizer, the ball ricocheting off the woodwork in what was arguably the save of the match.

KCB introduced Dennis Okoth in the 60th minute, and the substitute nearly made an instant impact, glancing a header just wide two minutes later from an Asieche corner.
The match saw several stoppages as injuries began to pile up. Herit Mungai had to be treated after appearing in significant discomfort, and just minutes later, Mathare were forced into double substitutions after a collision left goalkeeper Kevin Ouru and Mungai unable to continue. Robert Mboya and Cedric Asango were introduced to stabilize the team.
As the clock wound down, Mathare made one final switch, bringing on Mohammed Kilume for the hardworking Asieche in the 89th minute. Ten minutes of added time followed, but KCB could not break through Mathare’s disciplined rearguard.
The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought 1-0 victory for Mathare United, who bounced back from their opening-day loss to Posta Rangers in the best possible way. For KCB, the defeat was a setback after their impressive start against Tusker and leaves them with questions ahead of a packed fixture schedule.
