Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns Midfielder Jayden Adams Dies Weeks After 2026 FIFA World Cup

South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The talented midfielder featured in all three of South Africa’s group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32, bringing the curtain down on what would become his final appearance on the international stage.

Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed Adams’ passing in an official statement on Saturday, saying the club was

Devastated by the tragic passing of Jayden Adams.”

The reigning South African champions said the Motsepe family, board of directors, technical team, players, management, staff, supporters and the entire Yellow Nation extend their deepest condolences to his family and friends while appealing for the family’s privacy to be respected during this difficult period.

South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie also paid tribute to Adams, describing him as a player whose talent, humility and professionalism inspired many across the nation.

Adams began his football journey in the youth ranks of Stellenbosch FC before becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract in 2020. He went on to make 139 senior appearances, helping Stellenbosch win the 2023 Carling Knockout title before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. At Sundowns, he quickly established himself as an important member of the squad, winning the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League.

He also represented the club at the FIFA Club World Cup before wearing South Africa’s colours at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His former club, Stellenbosch FC, described Adams as a prodigious footballer who rose through its academy to make his professional debut at 19 before making 139 senior appearances and helping the Maroons lift the 2023 Carling Knockout trophy. Paying tribute to their former midfielder, the club said:

A proud flagbearer for the Cape Winelands, Jayden leaves behind a lasting legacy in Stellenbosch and an enduring impact on South African football. He will be deeply missed, and never forgotten.”

On the international stage, Adams also played a key role in South Africa’s third-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations before featuring in all three group-stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Bafana Bafana reached the Round of 32.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” Minister McKenzie said.

The minister also revealed that Adams displayed remarkable courage during the World Cup after learning that his grandmother had died just hours before South Africa’s match against Czechia, yet still chose to represent his country.

While speculation has emerged over the circumstances surrounding his death, the government urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information.

“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed,” McKenzie said, appealing for compassion and respect for the family’s privacy.

Adams leaves behind a young daughter, his family, teammates and millions of supporters. His legacy will live on through his achievements with Stellenbosch FC, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, where he proudly represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
