The 2026 FIFA World Cup has officially rewritten football history after breaking the all-time tournament attendance record, surpassing a milestone that had stood for more than three decades.
On June 25, 2026, FIFA confirmed that cumulative attendance had reached 3,605,357 spectators, eclipsing the previous record of 3,587,538 fans set during the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States. With several matches still left to be played, the tournament is expected to raise the benchmark even further.
Before the 2026 edition, the highest-attended FIFA World Cups was the United States in 1994 (3,587,538 fans)..

The expanded 2026 tournament has now moved to the top of that prestigious list.
The historic moment came during the Group E finale between Ecuador and Germany at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. A capacity crowd of 80,663 spectators witnessed Ecuador produce one of the tournament’s biggest shocks with a stunning 2-1 victory over four-time champions Germany.

The sold-out crowd not only made it the best-attended match of the tournament so far but also pushed the overall attendance beyond the 3.6 million mark, officially ending the 32-year reign of the USA 1994 World Cup record.
The achievement is particularly remarkable considering that the 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first to feature 48 teams and 104 matches, significantly expanding the competition’s global footprint.
The United States has hosted the lion’s share of the tournament, staging 78 matches across 11 cities, while co-hosts Mexico and Canada have each hosted 13 matches, spread across three and two cities respectively.
While many fixtures have attracted packed stadiums, not every match has enjoyed the same level of turnout. The Panama versus Ghana group-stage encounter played in Toronto on June 17 recorded the tournament’s lowest attendance so far, with an official crowd of 42,942 spectators.
Even so, the overall numbers underline the enormous global appeal of the FIFA World Cup. With the knockout rounds still underway and several high-profile fixtures remaining, the 2026 edition is on course to set a final attendance record that could stand for many years to come.
