In a decision released on Monday, the Appeals Committee ruled in favour of Kabati Youth in their appeal against Migori Youth over the eligibility of player Collins Ouma Otieno. The dispute stemmed from a league match between the two sides that had originally ended in a 1-1 draw.

Kabati Youth challenged the player’s registration status, arguing that Migori Youth fielded an ineligible player. The matter was initially examined by the FKF Player Status Committee, which established that the player’s registration had been processed as a new registration and approved before the official registration window had opened.

According to findings upheld by the Appeals Committee, the player was registered on January 5 and approved on January 8, despite the registration window officially opening on January 12. The tribunal further found that Migori Youth had knowledge of the player’s status but nonetheless fielded him in the match.

In the ruling, the Appeals Committee dismissed objections raised by Migori Youth, upheld the Player Status Committee’s determination on the player’s registration and found merit in Kabati Youth’s appeal. The committee consequently overturned the 1-1 result and awarded Kabati Youth a 2-0 victory. Migori Youth were also docked three points from their league tally, fined KSh100,000 and the player handed a three-match suspension. The ruling further directed that the amended result be reflected in the current league standings.

The verdict immediately reshapes what was already shaping up to be a thrilling finish to the season. Migori Youth, who had occupied top spot, now find themselves displaced after the points deduction allowed 3K FC to move to the summit on goal difference. Kabati Youth are also significant beneficiaries after being awarded the three points from the overturned fixture.

In a statement released shortly after the ruling, the club acknowledged the decision but stressed that it respectfully disagrees with the verdict. The club reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law and established football dispute-resolution mechanisms, adding that it has confidence in the available legal and regulatory processes and will pursue the appropriate channels to seek redress.

Migori Youth management also moved to reassure supporters, partners and stakeholders, insisting there is no cause for alarm and maintaining that the club remains focused on its sporting objectives. The statement concluded by expressing confidence that truth, clarity and justice will ultimately prevail, signaling that the club could yet challenge the ruling through further legal avenues.

While attention has largely focused on the courtroom drama, the battle on the pitch is now set to take centre stage. The ruling has effectively transformed the final two matchdays into a high-stakes showdown involving the league’s top four clubs.

League leaders 3K FC appear to have seized the initiative at the perfect moment. They first travel to face already relegated Mwatate United before hosting Migori Youth on the final day in what could ultimately decide the championship and automatic promotion.

Migori Youth face an even more demanding route. Before their decisive trip to 3K FC, they must first navigate a difficult home clash against fourth-placed Equity Bank. Any slip-up in that encounter could leave their promotion ambitions hanging in the balance heading into the season finale.
