Kenya’s hopes of defending the African women’s volleyball title on home soil ended in disappointment on Friday after the Malkia Strikers fell 3-0 to Egypt in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Championship at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The defending champions had hoped to complete their campaign with another continental crown in front of a passionate home crowd, but Egypt produced a disciplined and ruthless performance to deny Kenya the title.

Egypt seized the initiative early, winning the opening set 25-21 before taking firm control of the second set. The three-time African champions dominated the exchanges to claim it 25-15, leaving Kenya needing a major turnaround to keep their title defence alive.

The Malkia Strikers responded with greater urgency in the third set, matching Egypt’s intensity and fighting to remain in contention. However, the visitors continued to apply pressure through their attacking game, making it difficult for Kenya to build any sustained momentum.

Even with the Kasarani crowd offering strong support, Egypt remained composed in the crucial moments and eventually won the third set 25-15 to complete a straight-sets victory and lift the African crown.

The result brought an end to Kenya’s unbeaten run and denied the Malkia Strikers Africa’s direct qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The 2026 African Championship was the first qualification pathway for LA28, with the continental champions earning the automatic Olympic quota. Egypt therefore claimed Africa’s direct ticket by winning the final.

Kenya, however, did not leave the championship empty-handed.

By reaching the final, the Malkia Strikers secured qualification for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup, alongside Egypt. Cameroon claimed Africa’s third World Cup place after winning the bronze medal.

More importantly for Kenya, the defeat does not bring their Olympic ambitions to an end. The Malkia Strikers still have opportunities to qualify for LA28 through the remaining qualification routes.

Those opportunities include the 2027 FIVB World Championship pathway and the FIVB world-ranking route linked to the 2028 Volleyball Nations League.

For Kenya, the immediate disappointment of losing the African crown will now give way to another challenge: regrouping, maintaining their position among Africa’s leading volleyball nations and maximising the remaining opportunities to reach Los Angeles.

The Malkia Strikers may have surrendered their continental title to Egypt, but their journey towards the 2028 Olympic Games is far from over.
