The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party’s National Governing Council (NGC) has formally endorsed Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga as the party’s new leader, officially succeeding his late brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The announcement was made on Thursday following a special NGC sitting in Mombasa, convened ahead of the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations this weekend. The council used the session to fill key leadership vacancies left pending in recent months.
Alongside Oburu’s endorsement, the NGC ratified the appointments of three Deputy Party Leaders:
- Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir,
- Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and
- Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi.
The council also confirmed Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga as Deputy Organising Secretary and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu as Secretary of Political Affairs.
All the newly ratified officials will formally assume office after approval by the party’s National Delegates Convention (NDC).
Oburu Oginga was first appointed acting party leader on October 16, 2025, by the ODM National Executive Council (NEC) following Raila Odinga’s death.
ODM’s anniversary celebrations were initially scheduled for last month but were postponed to allow Raila to travel to India for medical treatment. After his passing, the party resolved to proceed with the event in honour of his life and legacy.
