New Era Begins as NSL 2025/26 Season Kicks Off Under Revamped Format

After a week’s delay, the FKF National Super League (NSL) roars back to life this weekend, kicking off the 2025/26 campaign under a completely overhauled structure that raises the stakes across every level of the table. With the controversial promotion and relegation playoffs now scrapped, the pressure is squarely on all 20 participating clubs to battle for the three automatic promotion slots to the FKF Premier League.

Unlike in past seasons, where a third-place finish in the NSL merely earned a shot at top-flight football through a nerve-racking playoff, this time the top three finishers will be promoted directly. For clubs like Naivas FC, this policy shift brings renewed hope. The retail-backed side has finished third in consecutive seasons, only to fall at the final hurdle against Premier League opposition in the playoffs. With that route now eliminated, Naivas heads into the new season with its clearest path yet to top-tier football, knowing that even a third-place finish guarantees promotion. They open their campaign with a tricky trip to the Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea to face Fortune Sacco.

The stakes are equally high at the opposite end of the table. In line with the Football Kenya Federation’s broader league reforms, the bottom four teams in the NSL will now be relegated directly to FKF Division One. This adds a new layer of urgency, especially for mid-table clubs that have previously coasted in relative safety. The margin for error has never been narrower.

Meanwhile, the NSL welcomes fresh blood. Promoted side Kabati Youth FC begins life in the second tier with a home fixture at Thika Stadium against Vihiga United in what is expected to be a lively encounter. However, the final 20-team lineup is not yet complete. A decisive rematch between Gucha Stars and Nakuru Bucks will determine which two clubs—between Gucha, Soy United, and Compel FC—claim the remaining slots. The original promotion playoff ended in controversy, prompting FKF to order a replay to resolve the dispute fairly.

The new structure brings clarity and fairness to the NSL. With promotion now based solely on league position, and no playoffs standing in the way, every point matters more than ever. At the same time, with four teams facing the drop, the relegation battle could prove just as fierce as the race for promotion.
