As Gor Mahia prepare for the new SportPesa Premier League season and the CECAFA Kagame Cup in Rwanda, the record 22-time Kenyan champions have ushered in a new era by officially appointing Sylvester Owino as the club’s captain.

The appointment marks another significant milestone in the remarkable journey of the 25-year-old centre-back, whose rise from a remote village in Kisumu County to leading Kenya’s most successful football club is a story of resilience, patience and unwavering determination.

Born and raised in Riat, Kisumu County, Owino did not initially dream of becoming a footballer. In fact, he was reluctant to join Okore Golden Youth Academy. What seemed like an ordinary decision would eventually shape the course of his life.

He sharpened his talent through primary school competitions and local grassroots teams including Okore United, Bandani FC and Okore Ogonda FC. However, his football journey came to an abrupt halt when he joined Kisumu Day high school, where his parents insisted he focus on his education. For four years, football took a back seat.

After completing his studies, Owino made the bold decision to revive his football dream. His first stop was Thika United, where he attended trials hoping to earn a contract. The trials ended in disappointment, but the setback only strengthened his resolve.

His breakthrough came at Vihiga Bullets, where his commanding presence and towering frame quickly made him an indispensable figure in defence. After helping the club make significant strides, he earned a move to Kakamega Homeboyz, spending two impressive seasons establishing himself as one of the country’s most dependable centre-backs.

His performances eventually attracted the attention of Gor Mahia and, in late 2022, he completed what he described as a dream move to Kenya’s most decorated football club.

Ironically, that dream transfer arrived during one of the club’s most difficult moments. Gor Mahia were serving a FIFA-imposed transfer ban, leaving Owino unable to be registered for the first half of the 2022/23 season. Instead of making an immediate impact, he was forced to watch helplessly from the stands as his teammates competed on the pitch.

Many players would have become frustrated, but Owino remained patient. When the transfer ban was lifted, he grabbed his opportunity with both hands and never looked back.

Over the next four seasons, the commanding defender established himself as one of the first names on the team sheet, playing a pivotal role in Gor Mahia’s continued dominance. His defensive partnership with Alphonce Omija became one of the club’s most formidable combinations, while his impressive understanding with Mike Kibwage during the CHAN tournament also earned widespread admiration. That partnership was later rekindled when Kibwage completed a move to Gor Mahia following the competition.

He helped K’Ogalo win 3 League titles, extending the club’s record to 22 league titles. His commanding displays, consistency and leadership qualities established him as one of the finest defenders in the country and a natural leader within the squad.

His impressive club form also earned him a place in the Harambee Stars setup, making his senior international debut against Zimbabwe in 2024. Since then, Owino has become a regular in the national team, featuring prominently during the CHAN campaign, where he was among the standout players who gained admiration from the fans and later part of FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

Following the retirement of long-serving captain Philemon Otieno, Gor Mahia entrusted Owino with the captain’s armband, a fitting reward for a player whose leadership had already become evident on and off the pitch.

From the humble beginnings to the captaincy is more than just another achievement. It is the culmination of years of perseverance, sacrifice and belief in his abilities.

As Gor Mahia embark on another domestic campaign and begin their quest for CECAFA Kagame Cup glory in Rwanda, the responsibility of leading K’Ogalo now rests on the shoulders of a player who once watched from the stands but has since grown into one of the club’s most successful modern-day defenders.
