Suspected Murderer Kevin Kangethe Arrested Days After Fleeing Police Custody

Kevin Kangethe, a murder suspect, has been caught days after escaping Muthaiga police cells and disappearing into thin air.

Kangethe, who is suspected of brutally murdering his fiancée at a US airport before escaping to Kenya, was detained on Tuesday in Ngong.

His relatives verified the detention, saying he was hauled into custody at the Ngong police station shortly after 11 p.m. on Tuesday under tight security.

Police had been camping in the Ololua area for two days and detained Kang’ethe’s brother, Brian Kang’ethe, on Monday.

Another cousin is in police custody after being detained on Tuesday morning.

The arrests come after Kangethe’s daring escape from the Muthaiga police station, where he had been detained following his first arrest in Nairobi’s Westlands neighborhood.

According to a police report detailing the occurrence that left the country’s security apparatus on the spot, the spectacular escape took place about 5.30pm on February 7, in front of the station commander, who only heard a disturbance as her officers sought to pursue the fleeing Kang’ethe.

According to the report, about 4 p.m., a man identified as John Maina Ndegwa appeared at the station and announced himself to the police as Kang’ethe’s personal lawyer, stating that he wanted to speak with his client.

The cops are claimed to have complied with the request and removed the suspect from the cells, leaving him alone with his ‘lawyer’ in a separate room; anti-crime office number 3.

“After a short while the prisoner escaped by running away and left the lawyer behind,” reads the report in part.

“At the time of the escape the station commander Chief Inspector Esther Muchomba was chairing a meeting/lecture with all the Anti-crime personnel and members of inspectorate while at her office, she was alerted by a loud noise of officers who were chasing the prisoner along Thika Super Highway but they did not manage to re-arrest him,” the report further reads.

It is unknown how the suspect outmaneuvered armed cops in broad daylight.

Four police officers, Elijah Kipkiror (Cell sentry), James Maina (report personnel), Ann Wanjiku (station guard), and Hassan Saman (station guard), who were on duty at the time, have been detained and are being interrogated about the event.

The advocate, John Maina Ndegwa, is also in police detention.

Kang’ethe is suspected of killing a 31-year-old Kenyan-born lady from Whitman, Massachusetts, whose corpse was recovered inside a car at Boston’s Logan Airport in November of last year.

Following his detention in Nairobi, Kang’ethe appeared in court on a miscellaneous motion, and investigators were allowed 30 days to hold him pending a decision on whether he would be extradited to the United States, where he is sought on murder charges.
