Gameweek 18 delivered everything the SportPesa League has come to be known for ; goals, controversy, late twists and shifting momentum at both ends of the table. With five matches played on Saturday and three on Sunday, the second round of the season began in dramatic fashion.

How it unfolded…

The weekend opened in Kericho where APS Bomet and Shabana FC produced one of the matches of the season. APS Bomet struck as early as the second minute through Philemon Nyakwaka after Shabana goalkeeper Stephen Ochieng mishandled a routine effort. Shabana responded through Brian Olega, who controlled well outside the area before unleashing a powerful equaliser to make it 1–1 at the break. Olega was at it again just two minutes into the second half, timing his run perfectly to beat the offside trap before firing Shabana ahead. Danson Kiprono then turned provider on the left flank, teeing up Brian Michira to extend the lead to 3–1 on 65 minutes. The match took another turn when APS Bomet’s Chris Wilunda was sent off in the 78th minute, but the hosts refused to fold. Philip Wasai pulled one back after a scramble in the box before Lawrence Kibet completed a stunning comeback in the 88th minute with a whipped cross that sailed into the top corner, sealing a remarkable 3–3 draw for the ten-man side.

In Awendo, Kenya Police FC claimed a vital away win over Mara Sugar. After a tight contest, the breakthrough came in the 67th minute following a slick passing move involving David Ochieng and Brian Otieno, with the latter setting up Burkina Faso international Yves Junior Koutiama to score the decisive goal and hand Police a 1–0 victory.

At Mbaraki Sports Ground, Bandari FC were held to a frustrating goalless draw by relegation-threatened Kariobangi Sharks, a result that did little to ease pressure on the Dockers despite controlling long spells of the match.

Posta Rangers and Mathare United shared the spoils at Kasarani Annex in a match briefly interrupted by tear gas drifting in from the main stadium. Posta took the lead through Faustina Ojiambo, who nodded in from a Wasambo corner, before Mathare responded in the 72nd minute. A well-delivered Masika corner caused confusion in the box, allowing Brian Ochieng to bundle home the equaliser for a 1–1 draw.

Saturday’s action concluded at Kasarani Stadium with a pulsating encounter between Bidco United and league leaders Gor Mahia. Bidco stunned the visitors in the 25th minute when Brian Mboya met Thomas Wainaina’s cross with a diving header to put the hosts ahead, sending Gor Mahia into the break trailing and facing boos from their fans. Charles Akonnor’s bold second-half changes paid off, with the introduction of Ebenezer Assifuah proving decisive. In the 62nd minute, Ebenezer Adukwaw danced past two defenders before slipping Assifuah through, and the striker calmly finished to level the match. Deep into stoppage time, Patrick Essombe’s free kick caused chaos in the box, and after the initial effort was punched away, Paul Ochuoga reacted quickest to fire home the winner in the 90+9th minute. The celebrations came at a cost, with Alpha Onyango sent off for a second yellow and Ochuoga booked for removing his shirt, but Gor Mahia secured a crucial 2–1 comeback win to stay top of the table.

Sunday’s programme began at Kasarani Annex where Tusker FC bounced back to winning ways with a 2–1 victory over KCB. Second-half strikes from Chris Erambo and Eric Kapaito put the Brewers in control, and although KCB pulled one back late on, Tusker held firm to claim their first win of the year.

Drama followed at Ulinzi Complex where the clash between Ulinzi Stars and Murang’a Seals was abandoned in the 94th minute. Ulinzi had taken an early lead through Paul Okoth, but Murang’a Seals equalised from the spot via captain Joseph Waithera after 32 minutes. In added time, Waithera struck again to seemingly win it for the visitors, but Ulinzi players confronted the referee immediately after the goal, forcing the match to be abandoned. The incident has now been referred to the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee for determination.

The weekend wrapped up at MISC Kasarani where AFC Leopards edged Sofapaka 1–0 to keep pace with Gor Mahia at the summit. After a cagey first half, the breakthrough came immediately after the restart when a Samwel Semo corner caused a scramble in the box, and Kayci Odhiambo’s effort deflected into the net off Ronald Musumba. Sofapaka pushed for an equaliser, but efforts from Emmanuel Otieno and others were kept out by Levis Opiyo Katasi as Ingwe held on through six minutes of added time.

At the end of Gameweek 18, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards sit level on points at the top, separated only by goal difference, Bidco drops to relegation zone, while last two remain unchanged..
