President William Ruto has announced an ambitious plan to eradicate Kibra’s slum status, aiming to transform it into the largest organized estate in Africa within the next decade. During a site inspection of the Soweto East Zone B Affordable Housing Project in Kibra today, he emphasized that the government is committed to eradicating slums through the Affordable Housing Programme. The project, which began in October 2022, is set to deliver 4,054 units by January 2026, with a broader vision to construct 25,000 units in Kibra. Ruto assured that the allocation of these units will be fair and transparent, prioritizing local residents while ensuring no discrimination based on ethnicity or background. He also announced a two-day extension of the enumeration exercise to accommodate more residents.
The government’s commitment to transforming Kibra aligns with its broader goal of eliminating slums across the country. Ruto highlighted that the Affordable Housing Programme is not only about providing decent homes but also about creating employment opportunities and fostering a united nation. With over 150,000 units under construction nationwide, the initiative is expected to employ over 200,000 young people, contributing to economic growth and social stability.
The transformation of Kibra is envisioned as a model for other informal settlements in Kenya, demonstrating the government’s commitment to urban development and the improvement of living standards for all citizens.
