Raila Odinga’s Former Aide Maurice Ogeta Appointed Mombasa County Security Adviser

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has appointed Maurice Ogeta, a former aide to ODM leader Raila Odinga, as the county’s Adviser on Security Affairs.

In a statement, Governor Nassir said the appointment follows the creation of the position by the Mombasa County Public Service Board in accordance with the law. He cited Ogeta’s extensive experience and institutional knowledge acquired at local, regional and international levels as key to the decision.

“I have today made appointments in the Executive Office of the Governor following the establishment of positions by the Mombasa County Public Service Board, in line with the provisions of the law. Mr Maurice Ogeta has been appointed to serve as Adviser, Security Affairs in the County Government of Mombasa,” Nassir said.

The governor noted that Ogeta’s long service, including his role as a close aide to Raila Odinga, positions him well to advise the county on security matters.

“This appointment is informed by his many years of experience and deep institutional knowledge built at local, regional and global levels, including his service to our late founding party leader, H.E. Raila Odinga, C.G.H,” he added.

In the same announcement, Nassir appointed Ken Ambani as Adviser on Creative Arts, a move aimed at strengthening and revitalising Mombasa’s creative industry. The governor said Ambani’s experience in the sector will play a critical role in supporting artists, empowering youth and expanding the county’s creative economy.

“I have also appointed Ken Ambani as my Adviser on Creative Arts. His wealth of knowledge and first-hand experience in the sector will be instrumental as we work to revive and grow the creative industry in Mombasa for the benefit of our artists, youth and the wider economy,” Nassir said.

The appointment comes weeks after former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria revealed plans to support Ogeta in establishing a VIP protection and training company.

Speaking in December at Ogeta’s home in Uyoma, Siaya County, Kuria said the initiative was meant to help Ogeta transition into entrepreneurship while allowing his professional experience to benefit a wider group.

Kuria described Ogeta as a highly skilled professional whose expertise should be institutionalised through a formal enterprise rather than limited to personal security assignments.

“I think Maurice should impact other people. That is what Baba would have wanted,” Kuria said, referring to Raila Odinga.

He added that Ogeta’s experience and training should be used to develop structured VIP protection services that benefit others, noting that the decision followed consultations with Ogeta on his future plans.
