President William Ruto has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to transforming Kenya’s sports landscape and nurturing youth talent, as he officially flagged off the national Under-20 men’s football team ahead of their campaign in the 2025 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking from State House on Tuesday, April 15, the President said Kenya is laying down the right infrastructure to harness and grow the talents of its youth, particularly in football. He highlighted the government’s goal to elevate the country’s status on the global sports stage and commercialize football with the same success seen in athletics.

“We are setting up the right sports infrastructure to support our youth in harnessing and nurturing their talents. Our prime focus is to elevate Kenya’s profile globally and commercialise our football — just like in athletics,” the President said.

The Head of State also expressed confidence in the Rising Stars, wishing them the best as they head into a tough Group B that includes Nigeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

“You are carrying the dreams of millions of Kenyans. We believe in your talent and determination,” Ruto told the team during the flag-handing ceremony.

This public show of support comes as the government continues implementing its national sports plan, including the construction of 37 constituency-level sports academies, meant to serve as training hubs for young athletes across the country.
