Naivas Strike Early as NSL Season Gets Underway with Tight Battles Across the Country

The FKF National Super League kicked off over the weekend with a full round of fixtures that served up narrow wins, tense draws, and early statements of intent from promotion hopefuls. With the league running under a revamped structure; where the top three earn automatic promotion and the bottom three face direct relegation, the opening matches already reflected the high stakes and fine margins expected throughout the 2025/26 season.

One of the standout results came from Wang’uru Stadium in Mwea, where Naivas FC began their campaign with a 1-0 away win over Fortune Sacco, courtesy of a composed finish by Francis Nambute. Having endured back-to-back third-place finishes in recent seasons, only to fall in the playoffs, Naivas now have their eyes firmly on one of the three guaranteed promotion spots. With no playoff safety net this year, this kind of grinding away win could prove crucial in their campaign.

Elsewhere, Nzoia Sugar FC marked their return to the second tier with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 3K FC at Sudi Stadium. Felix Seda netted twice for the hosts, underlining his attacking threat, while Ronald ‘Kadona’ Kalerwa pulled one back for the visitors. Nzoia’s ability to respond to pressure will be closely watched this season, especially as they seek an immediate return to top-flight football.

There were also contrasting starts for the two clubs recently relegated from the FKF Premier League. FC Talanta began their redemption mission positively, edging Kibera Black Stars 1-0 in Ngong courtesy of a 69th-minute strike by Alex Kipruto. However, Nairobi City Stars, another former top-flight side, failed to match that energy, falling 1-0 to MOFA in Homa Bay after Laban Otieno struck late in the 80th minute.

Elsewhere, Syphas Otieno was the difference-maker for Migori Youth in their clash against Mwatate United, finding the net in the 32nd minute at Green Stadium in Awendo.

Promoted side Kabati Youth FC earned a valuable point in their NSL debut, drawing 1-1 with Vihiga United at Thika Stadium. Mac Ferran found the net for the newcomers, who showed early signs of resilience and promise despite facing more experienced opposition. Another 1-1 draw was recorded in Luanda, where Luanda Villa shared spoils with Samwest Black Boots, with Dylan Wakake getting on the scoresheet for the hosts.

The only Saturday fixture saw Mombasa United pull off a notable away win over MCF FC, with Fidel’s 31st-minute goal proving the difference. It’s a confidence-boosting start for the coastal side as they look to establish themselves early in the top half.

While it is still early days, the weekend results were a strong reminder that there will be no easy matches this season. The new structure has not only increased the value of every point but has also placed even more pressure on clubs to hit the ground running. Naivas, Talanta, and Nzoia have already done that, others will be looking to catch up quickly when Round Two rolls around.
