Nairobi United Gatecrash Gor Mahia’s Coronation with Nyayo Upset

What was supposed to be the perfect ending to a championship-winning campaign turned into an afternoon of frustration for Gor Mahia as Nairobi United spoiled the party with a hard-fought 1-0 victory on the final day of the 2025/26 Kenyan Premier League season at a packed Nyayo National Stadium.

The stage had been set for a grand coronation. Fresh from clinching a record-extending league title, Gor Mahia received a guard of honour before kick-off, the second such tribute in as many matches after Mara Sugar had offered the same gesture. Thousands of supporters filled the stadium to capacity, creating a sea of green and white as they gathered to celebrate another successful campaign.

Yet while the trophy presentation remained on schedule, the result on the pitch told a different story.

Gor Mahia began with purpose and nearly found an early breakthrough when Paul Ochuoga forced a block inside the area within the opening minutes. Nairobi United, however, quickly settled into the contest and showed they had not travelled to Nairobi merely to participate in the celebrations.

The visitors looked sharp whenever they broke forward, with Jackson Dwang and Duncan Omalla combining effectively to stretch Gor Mahia’s backline. Their growing confidence was rewarded midway through the first half.

A well-worked move involving Kushoto and Omalla ended with a dangerous delivery into the box, where Enoch Machaka rose above the defence to power a header beyond the goalkeeper and hand Nairobi United a surprise lead in the 25th minute.

The goal shifted momentum in favour of the visitors, who remained compact and disciplined while limiting the champions to half chances. Despite enjoying more possession, Gor Mahia struggled to break down Nairobi United’s organized defensive structure before the halftime whistle.

After the break, the champions responded with greater urgency. Enock Morrison attempted to orchestrate attacks from midfield while set pieces and crosses continually tested the visitors’ resilience.

The introduction of Patrick Esombe and Lawrence Juma injected fresh energy into Gor Mahia’s attack, with Esombe particularly lively down the flanks. However, the final touch remained elusive as Nairobi United continued to defend with determination.

As the clock ticked down, Gor Mahia threw more bodies forward in search of an equaliser. Ochuoga fired over the bar, Bryton Onyona delivered dangerous balls into the area, and Morrison won crucial free kicks around the box.

The home crowd erupted late in the game when the ball found the back of the net, only for celebrations to be cut short after the referee ruled that Nairobi United goalkeeper Jairo had been fouled in the build-up.

With their lead still intact, Nairobi United managed the closing stages expertly, introducing fresh legs and slowing the tempo whenever possible. The visitors held firm through a tense finale to secure a memorable victory against the newly crowned champions.

While Gor Mahia eventually lifted the league trophy amid jubilant scenes from their supporters, Nairobi United ensured the champions’ coronation was far from flawless.
