Nairobi City County Begins Search for Substantive County Secretary

The Johnson Sakaja administration has officially launched the recruitment process for a substantive County Secretary and Head of Public Service, marking the first time the position is being filled permanently during the governor’s tenure.

The vacancy was advertised by the Nairobi County Public Service Board after the role had been held in an acting capacity for months.

Currently, Housing and Urban Renewal Chief Officer Godfrey Atiel is serving as acting county secretary, having taken over from Planning Chief Officer Patrick Analo.

According to the advertisement published in local newspapers, interested applicants have until May 28 to submit their applications.

The county government is seeking candidates with a university degree recognised in Kenya and at least 10 years of relevant professional experience.

Applicants must also demonstrate at least five years of senior leadership experience in either the public or private sector and meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity.

The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating County Executive Committee business, keeping official records and minutes, and communicating cabinet decisions to relevant authorities.

Other duties include overseeing implementation of county government policies, providing direction to public officers, and carrying out additional responsibilities assigned by the governor.

Godfrey Atiel assumed the acting role in August 2024 and immediately began engagements with county staff after his appointment.

At the time, he thanked Governor Sakaja for the opportunity, pledging to prioritise service delivery and operational efficiency within City Hall.

Former acting county secretary Patrick Analo also expressed gratitude to the governor during the handover, describing his time in office as an honour and thanking the administration for the trust placed in him.
