Kenyan football has been thrown into deep mourning following the tragic death of Kakamega Homeboyz defender Silas Abungana, who passed away on Wednesday night while undergoing treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital.
The Sportpesa League club confirmed that Abungana died a few minutes before midnight after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday night. The 25-year-old’s passing has shocked the football community and left teammates, fans, and fellow professionals grappling with a profound loss.
In an official statement released on Thursday morning, Kakamega Homeboyz expressed their devastation at the untimely death of the defender, confirming the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Kakamega Homeboyz Football Club is deeply devastated by the untimely demise of Silas Abungana,” the club stated.
“The club can confirm that Silas passed away a few minutes before midnight on Wednesday, 4 February while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital, this after succumbing to head injuries sustained during an attack on Tuesday, 3 February night.”
“During this incredibly difficult time, we respectfully request privacy for Silas’ family, teammates, friends, and club officials as we come to terms with this unimaginable loss. The club will issue further communication in due course.”
Abungana had joined Kakamega Homeboyz at the start of the 2025/26 season, completing his move from Gusii United on September 5. Although his time at the club was brief, he was viewed as a promising addition to the squad, bringing experience from Kenya’s lower divisions and a reputation for resilience and commitment in defense.
Before his move to Kakamega, Abungana was part of the Shabana team that earned promotion to the Kenyan Premier League in 2023. He later returned to Gucha Stars in Division One, where he once again played a central role in a successful promotion campaign, helping the club rise to the National Super League.

Gucha Stars, one of his former clubs, also released a statement mourning the loss of their immediate former defender and paying tribute to his character and contribution on the pitch.
We are really devastated to learn of the demise of Silas Abungana, our immediate former defensive player who switched sides to SPL side, Kakamega Homeboyz, at the start of this season,” the club said.
“A solid rock who was part and parcel of our promotion journey in Division 1. A man who persevered our lowest moments and fought through sweat and blood for our best moments.”
“A real warrior has rested. Rest in peace, Sila.”

Abungana’s death has cast a dark cloud over Kenyan football, cutting short a career that had seen him rise steadily through the ranks with determination and grit. As tributes continue to pour in from clubs, players, and supporters, the football fraternity pauses to remember a defender whose journey and life ended far too soon.
