Gor Mahia will face hosts Rayon Sports at Amahoro Stadium tonight at 7:00 PM EAT in the CECAFA Kagame Cup final, with both clubs chasing an end to long-standing regional title droughts. K’Ogalo have waited 41 years since their last triumph in 1985, while Rayon Sports are seeking to end a 28-year wait for the trophy, setting the stage for a final charged with history, expectation and regional bragging rights.

For Gor Mahia, the final represents the culmination of an eventful campaign under Charles Akonnor. The KPL record holders began their Group A journey in devastating fashion, dismantling Rwandan champions APR FC 5-0 before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Uganda’s Vipers SC. They recovered by edging Djibouti’s Garde République 1-0 to top the group and then survived a dramatic semi-final against Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman, winning 8-7 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 following extra time.

The journey has also produced an intriguing historical parallel that will excite the travelling Gor Mahia faithful. K’Ogalo missed the 1984 edition while serving a suspension, just as they were absent from last year’s tournament after surrendering the regional title to Police FC. When they returned in 1985, Gor Mahia topped their group, reached the semi-finals and eliminated Sudanese club El Merreikh before going on to lift the trophy.

Four decades later, the parallels have continued to unfold. Gor Mahia returned to the competition, topped their group, eliminated Sudanese opposition in the semi-finals and have now reached the final, just as they did in 1985. This time, Al Hilal Omdurman stood in their way, with K’Ogalo prevailing dramatically on penalties. With Rayon Sports now standing between them and the trophy, Gor Mahia supporters will be hoping the similarities with 1985 continue one step further.

Akonnor believes his players have earned their place in the final through their attitude and resilience.

“They’ve shown great character, good attitude on the field of play and we are very, very happy to be here,” the Ghanaian coach said, praising his players after their difficult route to the final.

Rayon Sports, however, will have the advantage of playing in front of their home supporters and arrive at the final with a perfect record. The Rwandan giants won all three of their group matches without conceding before defeating South Sudan’s Jamus SC 3-1 in the semi-final.

Rayon opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Zanzibar’s KVZ FC, edged Kenyan side Tusker FC 1-0 and then defeated Al Hilal Omdurman 1-0 to finish top of their group . Their impressive run continued against South Sudanese Jamus which they dismantled 3-1 , setting up the final against K’Ogalo.

The hosts know Gor Mahia well, having defeated them 2-0 during the Rayon Day invitational friendly about three weeks ago. Tonight’s encounter, however, carries considerably greater significance, with the regional crown at stake.

Rayon coach Francis Christian Haringingo has also built a highly international squad, with the Rwandan side potentially fielding 7 foreign players in their starting XI. Cameroonian goalkeeper Junior Dande, Chadian defender Charles Tchouplaou, Burundian midfielder Akbar Muderi, Nigerien midfielder Ibrahim Mansouru Djingarey, Malian midfielder Issa Djiguiba, Togolese forward Antonio Atisso Kodjo and Cameroonian attacker Herman Junior Kameni are among the foreign contingent which Gor mahia must be worry of.

Akonnor expects a tactical battle against a compact Rayon side and knows his team cannot afford to be drawn into an uncomfortable contest.

“Rayon Sports are a very difficult side, a very compact side that if you try to go through the middle they are very strong there,” he said.

Despite the challenge and home advantage enjoyed by Rayon, Akonnor insists Gor Mahia have not travelled to Kigali merely to compete.

“We are here to win. We want to win the cup,” he declared.

K’Ogalo will have to cope with several absentees. Midfielder Jackson Dwang is suspended after his red card against Al Hilal, while captain Sylvester Owino, Patrick Essombe and Samuel Kapen remain sidelined with injuries suffered during the tournament. However, Alpha Onyango is available again after serving his suspension and provides Akonnor with another important option in midfield.

Gor Mahia can also draw confidence from the impact of their revamped squad. New arrivals have provided encouraging glimpses throughout the tournament, with striker Paul Okoth scoring on his competitive debut against APR, while Enock Machaka has impressed in midfield. Lesley Otieno has shown his attacking quality and composure, while Daniel Sakari has offered valuable versatility and experience. The likes of David Okoth, Ebenezer Ocran and other new additions have also gained important minutes as Akonnor builds a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts.

For K’Ogalo, the stakes go far beyond tonight’s silverware. Victory would deliver their fourth CECAFA title, end a 41-year drought and provide a remarkable early reward for Akonnor’s revamped squad.

There is also a financial incentive, with the champions set to receive US$30,000 (approximately Ksh. 3.87 million), while the runners-up will earn US$20,000 (about Ksh.2.58 million).
