Defending champions Gor Mahia missed a good opportunity to cut the gap on FKF Premier League leaders Kenya Police after losing 2-1 to struggling Nairobi City Stars at Dandora Stadium in Nairobi on Thursday afternoon.
A win would have reduced the margin to two points between Gor Mahia and Police, as well as leapfrogging Tusker into second place with a game in hand against Leopards, but they remain third with 53 points.
Prior to kickoff, K’Ogalo had received a significant lift from their championship contenders’ collapse on Wednesday, when Police lost 2-1 to Kakamega Homeboyz and second-placed Tusker lost 2-0 to Talanta FC.
City Stars took the lead against the run of play in the fifth minute with Hansel Ochieng, but Benson Omala equalized after four minutes.
Vincent Owino then converted from the spot in the 17th minute to secure City Stars’ second league victory in a row.
A staunch defensive performance by City Stars, along with Gor Mahia’s lack of a cutting edge, saw the Simba wa Nairobi win 2-1, moving them from last place to 17th with 30 points, just two points behind the safety zone with three games remaining.
Earlier, at the same location, Kariobangi Sharks overcame free-falling KCB 1-0, handing the Bankers their fourth consecutive loss.
Humphrey Aroko’s single goal propelled the Sharks to 12th position with 36 points, while the defeat saw KCB fall further behind in the top four finish race, sitting seventh on the log with 41 points.
